What is a Remote HL7 Interface?

A Remote HL7 Interface job involves developing, managing, and troubleshooting HL7 (Health Level Seven) interfaces that facilitate communication between healthcare systems. Professionals in this role work remotely to integrate electronic health records (EHRs), medical devices, and other healthcare applications. They typically use interface engines like Mirth Connect, Cloverleaf, or Rhapsody to ensure data is exchanged accurately and securely. Strong knowledge of HL7 standards, healthcare workflows, and troubleshooting skills are essential for this position.

What are the typical daily responsibilities for a Remote HL7 Interface specialist?

A Remote HL7 Interface specialist typically spends their day developing, testing, and maintaining HL7 interfaces to ensure smooth data exchange between healthcare applications. This often involves troubleshooting interface issues, coordinating with hospital IT staff and EHR vendors, and documenting workflow changes. Specialists may also participate in project meetings, assist with user acceptance testing, and provide technical support for implemented interfaces. Since the work is remote, strong written and verbal communication is essential to collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary teams and stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Remote HL7 Interface position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote HL7 Interface specialist, you need strong knowledge of HL7 messaging standards, healthcare data integration, and relevant technical experience with systems such as EHRs and interface engines. Familiarity with integration tools like Mirth Connect, Cloverleaf, and common scripting or programming languages, as well as HL7 certification, are often expected. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective remote communication abilities help set professionals apart. These competencies are crucial for ensuring reliable data exchange between healthcare systems and seamless collaboration with distributed technical and clinical teams.

Healthcare Integration Engineer, Senior
The Opportunity:
Are you looking for an opportunity to create technical synergy that will modernize and secure the flow of clinical and laboratory data across the federal health enterprise? As an integration engineer, you know the importance of ensuring clinical applications, laboratory systems, and messaging interfaces work together. You're eager to apply your health IT and interoperability knowledge to develop creative solutions.
On our team, you'll design, develop, and implement solutions for software integration projects across functions or between organizations that'll directly impact patient care and public health reporting. Using HL7v2 and FHIR standards, interface lifecycle processes, and an Agile framework, you'll work alongside software development engineers to integrate laboratory information management systems, EHRs, and cloud-hosted clinical applications. You'll use tools like Rhapsody, Azure, GitHub Actions, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and modern observability stacks to plan, organize, and conduct integration projects that meet design specifications and standards from inception to completion.
In this role, you'll impact the health mission by guaranteeing that lab results, orders, and clinical documents move reliably and securely between systems that were never designed to talk to each other and by building the monitoring and alerting that proves it. With opportunities to learn new tools and skills, we focus on growing and collaborating as a team to make the best solutions for our customers. This role is located in Atlanta, GA.
Work with us as we integrate new solutions for the federal health mission.
Join us. The world can't wait.
You Have:
  • 5+ years of experience in software or systems integration
  • Experience developing, testing, and deploying HL7 interfaces in an integration engine such as Rhapsody, Mirth Connect, Corepoint, or InterSystems
  • Experience with HL7v2 message structures, including ADT, ORM, ORU, and SIU message types
  • Experience with infrastructure automation and scripting in Python, PowerShell, or Bash and CI/CD pipeline development using GitHub Actions, including workflow authoring, reusable workflows, and secrets management
  • Experience deploying and supporting applications in a cloud environment
  • Knowledge of interface troubleshooting across the full path, including TCP, MLLP, SFTP, and REST transport layers
  • Knowledge of observability practices, including logging, metrics, distributed tracing, alerting, and SLO definition
  • Ability to diagnose production interface failures and drive root cause analysis under time pressure
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Suitability/Fitness determination based on client requirements
  • Bachelor's degree

Nice If You Have:
  • Experience integrating with a LIMS platform, such as STARLIMS, LabWare, LabVantage, or Clinisys
  • Experience with FHIR R4, including implementing or consuming RESTful FHIR APIs and working with US Core profiles
  • Experience with infrastructure as code using Terraform, Bicep, or ARM templates and Azure services, including AKS, Azure Functions, API Management, Service Bus, Key Vault, and Azure Monitor
  • Experience with GitHub Actions self-hosted runners, environment protection rules, and OIDC-based authentication to Azure
  • Experience version-controlling and promoting integration engine configurations across environments through automated pipelines
  • Experience with Rhapsody IDE JavaScript filters, custom mapping, and lookup tables
  • Knowledge of HIPAA, HITECH, FISMA, and FedRAMP requirements as they apply to PHI in transit and at rest and healthcare data standards beyond HL7, including CCDA, X12, LOINC, SNOMED CT, and IHE profiles
  • Ability to mentor junior engineers on interface design patterns and production support practices
  • Master's degree in Health Informatics or Computer Science
  • Rhapsody Integration Engine, HL7 FHIR Proficiency, AHIMA or HIMSS, or Azure Certification such as AZ-104, AZ-204, or AZ-400 Certification
