Remote Higher Education information

What is remote higher education?

A Remote Higher Education job involves working in the academic field, such as teaching, administration, student support, or research, from a remote location rather than on-campus. These roles leverage online platforms for instruction, advising, and collaboration. Common positions include online instructors, curriculum developers, academic advisors, and instructional designers. Remote higher education jobs require strong digital communication skills and familiarity with virtual learning tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in remote higher education?

Excelling in remote higher education roles requires expertise in instructional design, online teaching methodologies, and subject matter expertise, typically supported by an advanced degree in education or a specific academic discipline. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), video conferencing tools, and digital content creation platforms is essential, along with relevant teaching certifications if applicable. Strong communication, time management, and motivation skills help professionals effectively engage students and manage responsibilities independently. These abilities are crucial for delivering high-quality education and fostering student success in a virtual learning environment.

What are some unique challenges of working in remote higher education, and how can they be addressed?

One unique challenge of remote higher education is maintaining student engagement and participation without in-person interaction. Successful online educators use interactive tools, regular feedback, and clear communication to create dynamic learning experiences. Additionally, managing your own schedule and staying organized is essential, as remote roles often require balancing synchronous and asynchronous tasks. Building a sense of community and collaboration among students can also be achieved through group projects and virtual office hours, ensuring ongoing support and a strong academic environment.

At Hoot Reading, we're on a mission to change children's lives through literacy, and we're growing our Hoot Teacher Network!
Hoot Reading is a leading online tutoring provider delivering 1:1, evidence-based literacy instruction through a network of qualified teachers. Partnering with K-12 school districts, educational organizations, and families across North America, Hoot provides high-impact tutoring and intervention during the school day, afterschool, and at home.
Teachers at Hoot provide 1:1 Structured Literacy lessons over videocall inside an innovative tech platform that supports individualized assessment and instruction for each student, working with them exactly in the skill areas they need!
The ideal Candidate:
  • Bachelor's degree in education (or equivalent) is required.
  • 2+ years of K-6 teaching experience with a strong grasp of phonics, decoding and reading fundamentals.
  • Tech-savvy with a reliable laptop, internet, and quiet workspace.
  • Maintains professionalism and effectiveness while working with competing priorities and diverse student needs.
  • Creates inclusive learning environments where students feel respected, valued, and supported.
  • Demonstrates resilience and flexibility when addressing complex academic, behavioral, and social-emotional challenges.
  • Experience supporting English learners and multilingual students is a plus.

Your Availability and Schedule:
  • Hours: We are currently looking for teachers who can support lessons between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM CT, Monday through Thursday, with peak teaching hours between 8:30 AM and 1:00 PM CT. While some late afternoon and evening opportunities may be available, they are limited. This is a part-time role, and hours vary based on student enrollment and scheduling needs.
  • Commitment: Teachers can expect to work 5-15 hours per week, depending on program demand and alignment with your availability. Actual hours are not guaranteed.
  • Start Date: September 7,2026 - onboarding with programs beginning at the end of September.
  • Consistency: Students meet with the same teacher three times per week at the same time of day. For this reason, we prioritize teachers who can offer consistent availability across multiple weekdays (Monday to Thursday).

Sound like you? Apply today! Successful candidates will be contacted for interviews. Hoot Reading is an equal-opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion.
