Brief Job Description:
Coordinates remote inspections of dental, veterinary, and minimal threat licensed facilities. Duties include performing complex technical reviews of Remote Inspection Forms and consultant reports to evaluate regulatory compliance, reviewing proposed corrective actions, ensuring compliance documents are accurate and properly formatted, and responding to inquiries regarding applicable regulations. Works under limited supervision from the X-ray North Group Manager with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs):
(65%) Independently performs complex technical review of returned Remote Inspection Forms to evaluate compliance with applicable regulations for dental, veterinary, or minimal threat devices. Reviews equipment performance evaluation reports prepared by independent consultants. Evaluates and approves corrective action plans. Verifies accuracy of calculations and entries in performance evaluations. Oversees production and formatting of compliance documents using VERSA and Microsoft Word. Corresponds with registrants to ensure complete responses and maintains timely data entry into agency systems. Provides technical guidance to staff, registrants, and the public. Recommends on-site inspections based on remote review outcomes.
(20%) Coordinates inspection actions with other Regulatory Services sections. Maintains inbox and Standard Violation files. Issues inspection requests and reviews registration files as needed when administrative support is unavailable. Conducts research and recommends updates.
(5%) Participates in the development of policies, procedures, regulation revisions, and technical guidance for use by radiation staff, applicants, registrants, and the public. Assists in the coordination of meetings and prepares statistical reports. Retrieves data from VERSA/RAS as needed.
(5%) Participates in formal training and short courses, supplements training with independent study, and maintains current knowledge of applicable regulations and health physics practices. May accompany local inspectors to remain informed of current radiological procedures and technologies.
(5%) Other duties as assigned include, but are not limited to, actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern and/or location.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
Knowledge of:
  • State and federal regulations regarding ionizing and non-ionizing radiation
  • Dental, veterinary, and industrial x-ray equipment functions and operations
  • State or federal regulatory enforcement programs
  • Mathematics required to perform calculations of inverse square, percentage of variation, and basic percentage calculations
  • Function, design, and operation of equipment used in radiation detection and measurement
  • Radiological health physics principles, practices and safety procedures, and related environmental areas

Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications:
Certificates are preferred but not required.
Current or previous ARRT Certification as a Radiologic Technologist
Current or previous MRT Certification as a Radiologic Technologist
Initial Screening Criteria:
Applicants must meet at least one (1) of the following three (3) criteria. * Two years of experience may be substituted for formal education.
1. Associate degree or higher in a physical science from an accredited two- or four-year college or university
2. Current or previous ARRT Certification as a Radiology Technologist with at least two years of experience
3. Current or previous MRT Certification as a Radiology Technologist with at least two years of experience
The following six (6) criteria are generally preferred but are not required; the hiring supervisor may consider any applicant that does not meet any or all the generally preferred criteria for this position, and may give preference to an applicant that meets one or more of the generally preferred criteria:
1. Experience applying laws, rules, policies, and procedures relating to governmental regulation
2. Experience as a state or federal inspector
3. Experience as a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO)
4. Experience in a health physics position
5. Experience in a regulatory or quality control position in a regulated industrial, educational, or medical industry
6. Experience in the design, assembly, maintenance, or repair of radiation machines
