Job description

Job Title: Principal Engineer - Plant Design Integration Location: Bellevue, WA Type: Contract Compensation: $69.00 - $116.00 Work Model: Remote – offsite

Overview

System One is seeking an experienced Plant Design Integration Engineer to support the development and maintenance of the plant architecture for an advanced nuclear reactor project. This role will integrate complex technical activities across plant design, engineering analysis, licensing, safety, risk, testing, and operations.

The ideal candidate will bring a broad nuclear engineering background, strong knowledge of NRC regulations, and the ability to lead cross-functional technical decisions affecting the overall plant design.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the development and maintenance of the Reactor Plant architecture and programs, ensuring integration of complex technical areas spanning design, analysis, licensing, and testing.
  • Provide technical oversight over nuclear design and analysis efforts, applying systems engineering principles.
  • Facilitate teamwork across multiple engineering disciplines and project organizations through strong communication and coordination skills.
  • Develop, manage, and integrate plant-level requirements, programmatic, and specification documents.
  • Research, develop, and implement design bases and strategies supporting plant design and licensing activities.
  • Interface with design disciplines to facilitate allocation of plant requirements and develop verification plans.
  • Ensure licensing and code requirements are clearly established and aligned with project strategies.
  • Support and review plant design cost studies, engineering decisions, and conduct interdisciplinary reviews.
  • Oversee plant safety and risk analyses, ensuring their impact on plant performance meets standards.
  • Lead design and integration reviews, resolving cross-functional technical issues.
  • Support licensing documentation for regulatory submittals and maintain compliance with licensing modernization projects.
  • Keep project and engineering management informed of emerging technical issues and risks.
  • Apply nuclear industry best practices to maintain high-quality engineering design and identify opportunities for improvement.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in nuclear facility design or operation.
  • Experience in plant or systems engineering, design engineering, fire protection, operations, or reactor engineering.
  • Minimum BS degree in nuclear, structural, chemical, mechanical, electrical engineering or an equivalent license.
  • Demonstrate initiative and the ability to work independently with moderate supervision.
  • Understanding of NRC regulations and related guidance; prior NRC interaction is desirable.
  • Leadership skills in cross-functional design, licensing, safety analysis, and PRA collaboration.
  • Team-oriented with ability to work effectively with distributed teams.
  • Broad knowledge across engineering disciplines, programs, and processes.
  • Proven ability to acquire new knowledge and adapt in fast-paced environments.
  • Ability to communicate complex design information clearly to management, teams, and stakeholders.
  • Capable of working in conceptual and first-of-a-kind environments, using good engineering judgment.
  • Experience working to quality standards such as ASME NQA-1 or ISO 9001.
  • High degree of trust, integrity, and respect; strong verbal and written communication skills.
