What is a remote geomatics engineer?

A Remote Geomatics Engineer is a professional who uses advanced technology, such as GPS, remote sensing, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), to collect, analyze, and interpret spatial and geographic data from a distance. They often work on projects related to mapping, surveying, and environmental monitoring without being physically present at the site. Their work supports industries like urban planning, agriculture, environmental science, and resource management by providing accurate spatial data and insights.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote geomatics engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Geomatics Engineer, you need a solid background in geospatial science, mathematics, and engineering, typically supported by a relevant degree such as Geomatics, Surveying, or Civil Engineering. Proficiency with GIS software (like ArcGIS or QGIS), remote sensing tools, GPS technology, and data analysis platforms is essential, and certifications such as GISP can be advantageous. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for collaborating remotely and interpreting complex spatial data. These qualifications ensure accurate data collection, analysis, and decision-making for projects that rely on geographic information, even when performed remotely.

What are the typical collaboration methods for a remote geomatics engineer working with distributed teams?

Remote Geomatics Engineers frequently collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including surveyors, GIS analysts, and project managers, using cloud-based platforms and project management tools. Communication is often conducted through video conferences, instant messaging, and shared digital workspaces to coordinate data collection, analysis, and project updates. Successful remote collaboration requires strong organizational skills and proactive communication to ensure that spatial data is accurately shared and project timelines are met. Familiarity with collaborative GIS software and version control systems is also highly beneficial in this remote environment.

What is the difference between Remote Geomatics Engineer vs Remote GIS Analyst?

AspectRemote Geomatics EngineerRemote GIS Analyst
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Geomatics, Geospatial Engineering, or related field; certifications like GISPBachelor's in Geography, GIS, or related; certifications like GISP or Esri Technical Certification
Work EnvironmentField data collection, GIS software, CAD tools, remote sensingGIS software, data analysis, mapping, report creation
Employer & Industry UsageEngineering firms, surveying companies, government agenciesUrban planning, environmental agencies, consulting firms

The main difference is that Remote Geomatics Engineers focus on surveying, mapping, and geospatial data collection, often involving fieldwork and technical engineering tasks. Remote GIS Analysts primarily analyze spatial data, create maps, and support decision-making through GIS software. Both roles require similar credentials but serve different functions within geospatial projects.

Job description

Responsibilities

Are you passionate about building advanced geospatial intelligence capabilities that directly support national security missions? We are seeking an Expert Integration Engineer with deep expertise in spectral exploitation environments, systems integration, and enterprise deployment to support mission-critical initiatives within the National System for Geospatial-Intelligence (NSG).

In this role, you will lead the engineering, integration, and deployment of cutting-edge spectral exploitation capabilities that enable Image Scientists to process, analyze, and exploit both literal and non-literal data. Working alongside systems engineers, software developers, and mission experts, you'll help ensure seamless interoperability across enterprise systems while advancing the next generation of GEOINT mission capabilities.

What You'll Do

As an Expert Integration Engineer, you will:

  • Lead the engineering, integration, and deployment of enterprise-scale spectral exploitation environments supporting GEOINT mission operations.
  • Serve as a trusted technical advisor to government leadership, providing expertise on strategic vision, technical roadmaps, system capabilities, and enterprise integration.
  • Translate mission needs and customer requirements into scalable technical solutions and systems capability requirements.
  • Plan and execute complex systems integration activities across cloud, on-premises, and hybrid environments.
  • Collaborate with systems engineers, developers, and Image Scientists to ensure end-to-end interoperability across the NSG TCPED Enterprise.
  • Analyze user requirements, system architectures, workflows, and technical dependencies to improve performance, automation, and operational efficiency.
  • Support technical planning, project management, risk mitigation, interface design, and performance engineering efforts.
  • Establish and maintain an integrated Processing, Exploitation, and Dissemination (PED) environment that enables advanced spectral exploitation tradecraft for image scientists.
  • Ensure the integrity, scalability, and performance of complex system-of-systems architectures supporting national intelligence missions.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Imagery Analysis, or another STEM-related discipline
    • Additional experience may be substituted for education (4 years with no degree or 2 years with a non-STEM degree)
  • 18+ years of relevant experience.
  • 5+ years of experience integrating sensor programs into large, complex System-of-Systems or Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) environments across cloud, on-premises, or hybrid infrastructures.
  • 5+ years supporting NGA programs or projects.
  • Experience integrating spectral data into spectral exploitation tools.
  • Experience integrating cloud-based technologies and enterprise solutions.
  • Strong understanding of the Systems Engineering Lifecycle.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the National System for Geospatial-Intelligence (NSG), Allied System for Geospatial-Intelligence (ASG), and National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) enterprise environments.
  • Previous Intelligence Community (IC) or Department of Defense (DoD) program experience.
  • Active TS/SCI clearance or the ability to obtain SCI eligibility and successfully pass a polygraph.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Imagery Analysis, or another STEM-related field.
  • INCOSE Expert Systems Engineering Professional (ESEP) certification.
  • Experience integrating spectral exploitation tools within the SAGE/CAP architecture.
  • Experience with NGA Advanced Tradecraft Services (ATS) tools, including Data Transformation Services and the Full Spectrum Tool Kit.
  • Working knowledge of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), associated methodologies, tools, and modeling languages.
  • Expertise in photogrammetry, remote sensing, image science, information sciences, geographic information systems (GIS), geomatics, or related disciplines.
  • Experience integrating Automation, Augmentation, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies into enterprise solutions.
