Job description

The Position

Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, seeks a strategic, experienced transactional attorney to provide legal support to Roche and Genentech's combined global Corporate Business Development team and other teams within the Roche Group, with a primary focus on structuring, drafting, and negotiating complex bio-pharma licensing and other strategic transactions. This position reports into the global Legal Business Development & Corporate practice group.

The Opportunity

To be successful in this role, you must have the ability to anticipate and assess legal and business risks associated with complex transactions and also possess a strong aptitude for learning new science and technologies in the bio-pharma and diagnostics spaces. You will be expected to structure, draft and negotiate complex licensing and strategic transactions, as well as develop and recommend innovative solutions to challenging legal and business issues.

You must be able to work closely and independently with stakeholders in business development, research, development, manufacturing, regulatory, finance, tax and commercial teams. You should feel comfortable leading cross-functional teams and managing competing objectives and demands from a variety of stakeholders. You should be able to clearly and effectively communicate recommendations to legal and non-legal colleagues, including senior executives and business stakeholders.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Key responsibilities of this individual contributor role will include but not be limited to the following:

  • Structuring, drafting and negotiating in-licensing and out-licensing of patents and know-how, research and development collaborations, and other strategic transactions.

  • Advising on complex business and legal issues in support of ongoing partnerships and collaborations with external partners and integrations of acquired assets.

  • Developing and maintaining a strong working knowledge of "market" terms for licensing and collaboration transactions, and a working knowledge of issues relevant to drug discovery and development in the context of business development transactions including manufacturing of large and small molecules, antitrust, privacy and other matters.

  • Contributing to cross-functional or departmental projects, knowledge management and development.

Who You Are

  • You have a United States law degree (JD) with a current good standing admission to at least one US state bar.

  • You have 7 or more years of relevant practice experience with at least 4 years at a law firm.

  • You have substantial experience drafting and negotiating life sciences licensing and collaboration agreements (please provide a deal sheet).

  • You have a strong working knowledge of other complex and business development transaction structures, including mergers, acquisitions, divestitures and financing transactions.

  • You are able to work global working hours as required, frequently being available as early as 6 a.m. Pacific Standard Time.

  • You possess and exhibit good judgment and interpersonal skills, and the organizational savvy and diplomatic sensitivities to effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary and global colleagues.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Prior experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology or other life sciences industry.

This role is located onsite at Genentech's South San Francisco, California campus, and a remote working arrangement is not available.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is$203,800 to $378,400. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
