Remote Gcp Devops Engineer information

What is a remote GCP DevOps Engineer?

A Remote GCP DevOps Engineer is a technology professional who specializes in managing and automating cloud infrastructure and deployment processes using Google Cloud Platform (GCP) tools, while working from a remote location. Their responsibilities often include setting up CI/CD pipelines, monitoring systems, ensuring security best practices, and optimizing cloud resources for scalability and reliability. They collaborate with development and operations teams to streamline workflows and improve software delivery. By working remotely, they leverage collaboration tools to stay connected with teams and manage GCP environments from anywhere.

How do remote GCP DevOps Engineers typically collaborate with distributed teams to manage cloud infrastructure effectively?

Remote GCP DevOps Engineers frequently collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as developers, QA, and security engineers, through virtual meetings, cloud-based documentation, and collaboration tools like Slack or Jira. They use Infrastructure as Code tools (like Terraform or Deployment Manager) and CI/CD pipelines to maintain transparency and consistency across team members, regardless of location. Effective communication and clear documentation are critical, as they ensure that infrastructure changes are understood and approved by all stakeholders. Regular syncs and shared dashboards help track deployment progress and quickly resolve any issues that arise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote GCP DevOps Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote GCP DevOps Engineer, you need expertise in cloud infrastructure, automation, CI/CD pipelines, and strong knowledge of Google Cloud Platform, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker, Jenkins, and GCP certifications such as Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer are highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate remotely make candidates stand out in this role. These skills are crucial for building scalable, reliable systems and ensuring seamless deployment and operations in cloud environments.

Job description

Title: Application Developer

Location: Oklahoma City, OK (Remote)

Duration: Long Term

Description

The Teachers’ Retirement System of Oklahoma (TRS) is undertaking a comprehensive, multiyear modernization initiative to replace aging legacy systems—including full retirement of the ALICE platform—and transition to a unified, cloud native environment. This effort centers on building MyPAS 3.0, a modern Azure-hosted pension administration system that integrates seamlessly with MyTRS and MyERS.

TRS serves a large and diverse membership of over 210,000 employees and retirees across more than 600 school districts, career tech centers, colleges, and universities, making it the largest of Oklahoma’s six state pension systems.

The modernization responds to long standing challenges such as fragmented workflows, manual processes, limited scalability, and stability issues in legacy technologies. The initiative introduces a modern stack—Angular, REST APIs, Azure SQL Managed Instances, Azure Function Apps, Power BI, a document management and process automation solution (pending platform evaluation and alternatives)—to support scalable, secure, and efficient operations.

  • Current state:
    • Legacy systems moved from on-premises hosting to Azure cloud migration in May 2024
    • Member portal modernized July 2025
    • All IS resources support legacy systems while simultaneously building modernized ones
    • Project charter and Software Development Life Cycle established and in practice
    • Environment and foundation for modern applications defined and nearing completion
  • Expected outcomes:
    • All major systems operate on the Azure platform with improved performance, scalability, and maintainability.
    • Retirement of ALICE and elimination of legacy technical debt.
    • Reduced manual work, fewer errors, and significantly improved turnaround times.
    • A modern document storage and capture solution, with improved workflows and reduced fragmentation
    • Enhanced security posture.
    • Improved user satisfaction and accessibility.
    • Greater operational resilience and adaptability.
    • Reduced maintenance burden, lower infrastructure costs, and fewer workarounds through modern platform infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of modern application development frameworks, programming languages, and secure coding practices
  • Knowledge of software development lifecycle (SDLC) methodologies, including Agile
  • Knowledge of business process analysis, functional design principles, documentation standards, user story development, and acceptance criteria definition
  • Knowledge of TRS business rules, including those specific to the Pension Software System
  • Familiarity with legacy systems architecture, dependencies, technologies, and integration points
  • Skill in performing all aspects of application development, including coding, unit testing, documentation, code reviews, and submitting pull requests for TRS staff to review
  • Skill in developing, enhancing, and maintaining application components that meet functional and technical requirements
  • Skill in developing clear, actionable user stories and maintaining a prioritized backlog
  • Skill in developing APIs, system interfaces, and automation workflows
  • Ability to deliver high-quality work output with minimal defects
  • Ability to translate technical specifications into maintainable, production-ready software
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with TRS technical staff, analysts, testers, and project managers
  • Ability to manage multiple development tasks and meet established timelines
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
