Remote Functional Safety Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Functional Safety Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Functional Safety Engineer, you need expertise in safety standards (like ISO 26262 or IEC 61508), risk analysis, and system engineering, typically supported by an engineering degree. Familiarity with safety analysis tools (such as FMEA, FMEDA, or Fault Tree Analysis software) and certification in functional safety (e.g., TÜV Functional Safety Engineer) are often required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills are crucial for collaborating with distributed teams and managing projects remotely. These competencies ensure the development of safe, compliant systems while maintaining effective teamwork and project delivery from a remote environment.

What are remote functional safety engineers?

Remote functional safety engineers are professionals who ensure that systems, particularly in industries like automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing, operate safely and comply with relevant safety standards—all while working from a remote location. Their main responsibilities include analyzing risks, developing safety requirements, and verifying that products meet safety regulations such as ISO 26262 or IEC 61508. They collaborate with cross-functional teams using digital tools, review design documentation, and may participate in remote audits or assessments. This remote role allows companies to access specialized expertise regardless of geographic location, while engineers benefit from flexible work arrangements.

How does a remote Functional Safety Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with safety standards?

As a remote Functional Safety Engineer, you'll frequently collaborate with design, development, and quality assurance teams through virtual meetings, shared documentation, and specialized safety tools. Effective communication and clear documentation are crucial, as you may be responsible for facilitating safety analyses (such as FMEA or HAZOP) and reviewing verification activities from a distance. Regular syncs, version control systems, and digital project management platforms help ensure that all safety requirements are tracked and met across distributed teams. Being proactive in outreach and maintaining strong relationships with team members are key to overcoming the challenges of remote work in this highly regulated field.

What is the difference between Remote Functional Safety Engineer vs Remote Systems Engineer?

AspectRemote Functional Safety EngineerRemote Systems Engineer
CertificationsISO 26262, IEC 61508, safety-specific certificationsIEEE, Cisco, or general systems certifications
Work EnvironmentAutomotive, industrial, or safety-critical sectorsIT, telecommunications, or software development sectors
Industry UsageDesigning safety functions and risk assessmentsSystem design, integration, and performance optimization

The Remote Functional Safety Engineer focuses on ensuring safety standards and risk mitigation in safety-critical systems, often in automotive or industrial sectors. In contrast, the Remote Systems Engineer handles system design and integration across various industries. Both roles require technical expertise but differ in their primary focus on safety versus system performance.

Job description

*REMOTE* Opportunity
Position Summary:
We are looking for an experienced remote Senior/Principal Satellite Systems I&T Engineer to support the functional verification and validation activity for aerospace projects. We're looking for candidates who can bring exceptional engineering skills and strong test experience in aerospace programs to the team.
Position Responsibilities:
The Senior/Principal Satellite Systems I&T Engineer's primary responsibility will be to support the U.S. satellite functional verification and validation activity. In this role, the engineer will map technical requirements to verification and validation strategies that ensure product quality, develop test plans and test procedures, and execute and report the test results. Being at the cutting edge of space technology, we need someone who is eager to learn, grow, and take on new and potentially unfamiliar challenges. There is no shortage of fascinating problems to solve.
Satellite Functional Verification and Validation 70%
  • Review the satellite functional specification and develop the test plan to verify and validate the requirements.
  • Design and build automated testing systems, tooling and/or ground support equipment (GSE) to optimize production and test workflow.
  • Execute and validate test documentation and equipment, then train others to run validated procedures/equipment.
  • Troubleshoot issues with hardware and/or equipment, collect and analyze test data, and write/review test reports, flags/non-conformances and other documentation, as required.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in cross-functional planning, coordination, and task execution situations involving the full spectrum of engineering and integration activities.

Satellite System Architecture Development 30%
  • Support system architecture trade studies and requirements development to meet mission needs.
  • Revise the satellite functional specification for new mission and customer needs.
  • Generate system architecture data products, including spacecraft CONOPS, algorithm descriptions, and interface documents.

Qualified Experience / Skills / Training:
Education:
  • Required: Bachelor's degree in STEM (Science, Technical, Engineering, Math) or related scientific areas.
  • Preferred: Masters in STEM (Science, Technical, Engineering, Math) or related scientific areas.

Experience:
  • 9 years of aerospace experience, including 5+ years' experience in satellite operation and SEIT (System Engineering, Integration and Testing) on spacecraft.

Knowledge, Skills, Demonstrated Capabilities:
  • Experience with common Systems Engineering and Test tools (DOORS, CCS5, JIRA).
  • Familiar with satellite operation, and any subsystem engineering (Guidance, Navigation, Control, Power system, Data Handling, and Software).
  • Familiar with product and quality assurance principles and experienced in generation and disposition of test flags and non-conformance documentation.
  • Experience with object-oriented programming (C, C++) and scripting languages (TCL, Python).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering documentation (e.g., electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, CAD models, wire lists).
  • Experience with the full Space mission lifecycle, including requirements development, design, manufacturing, test, and mission operations.

Travel Required:
  • Periodic travel (less than 10%) to facilities or partner companies.

Eligibility:
  • US Citizenship is required.

Clearance:
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance.
