What are Remote Front End Engineers?

Remote Front End Engineers are software developers who specialize in building the user-facing parts of websites and web applications while working from a location outside of a traditional office. They use technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create interactive and visually appealing interfaces that users interact with directly. Working remotely, they collaborate with teams via online communication tools and are often responsible for ensuring that web applications are responsive, accessible, and performant across different devices and browsers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Front End Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Front End Engineer, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks like React or Angular, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), build tools, and UI/UX design principles is typically required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and problem-solving skills are crucial for effective remote collaboration and project delivery. These competencies ensure high-quality, maintainable user interfaces and seamless teamwork in a distributed environment.

What is the difference between Remote Front End Engineer vs Remote Web Developer?

AspectRemote Front End EngineerRemote Web Developer
Required SkillsHTML, CSS, JavaScript, frameworks like React or AngularHTML, CSS, JavaScript, basic backend knowledge
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with designers and back-end developers on complex UI projectsBuilds and maintains websites, often with broader scope including backend tasks
Industry UsageTech, e-commerce, SaaS companies focusing on user interfacesVarious industries including marketing, media, and small business websites

Remote Front End Engineers focus primarily on creating and optimizing user interfaces using advanced frameworks, often working closely with designers and back-end teams. Remote Web Developers may handle both front-end and some back-end tasks, with a broader scope in website development. While both roles require similar technical skills, the Front End Engineer role emphasizes UI/UX and interactive features, making it more specialized in front-end technologies.

How do Remote Front End Engineers typically collaborate with design and back-end teams to ensure seamless project delivery?

Remote Front End Engineers often use collaborative tools like Slack, Jira, and Figma to communicate effectively with both design and back-end teams. Regular virtual meetings and clear documentation help bridge the gap caused by physical distance. Engineers are expected to participate in code reviews, provide feedback on UI/UX designs, and coordinate API integrations to ensure a smooth workflow. Clear communication and proactive engagement with team members are key to overcoming challenges that arise from remote collaboration.

Job description

Emergent builds autonomous coding agents that replace traditional software development by generating, testing, and deploying production applications directly from plain-language intent. Our systems run in production at global scale and are used to build millions of real applications.

Since public launch, Emergent has reached $100M ARR in 8 months. 6M+ users across 190+ countries have built 6.5M+ applications on Emergent. We've raised $100M+, backed by Khosla Ventures, SoftBank, Google, Lightspeed, Prosus, Together, and Y Combinator.

We're solving the hard part of AI-driven software creation: correctness, reliability, security, and scale in real production systems. The team is built by repeat founders, Olympiad medalists, IIT & IIM alumni, and leaders from Google, Amazon, and Dropbox.

We're hiring builders who want ownership, speed, and impact at global scale.

What You'll Do:

  • Define and own the frontend architectural vision for complex, high-scale products
  • Design scalable component systems, UI frameworks, and internal tooling
  • Translate product requirements and Figma designs into robust technical architecture
  • Lead performance optimization, accessibility, security, and scalability initiatives
  • Break down complex problems, propose long-term technical strategies, and influence roadmap
  • Build reusable libraries, design systems, and internal packages for engineering efficiency
  • Review critical code paths, guide engineering best practices, and maintain technical excellence
  • Work closely with Product, Design, and Backend to shape end-to-end solutions
  • Mentor and upskill senior engineers, enabling them to operate at an architect level

What We're Looking For:

  • 4 to 8 years of frontend engineering experience with deep React.js and TypeScript expertise
  • Strong background in architecting large-scale, distributed, modular frontend systems
  • Mastery of modern state management (Redux, Zustand, Recoil, React Query, or similar)
  • Expert in JavaScript (ES6+), TypeScript, Web APIs, browser internals, and performance tuning
  • Strong with build tools (Webpack, Vite, Turborepo), bundling, and optimization strategies
  • Ability to design UI frameworks, component libraries, and cross-platform solutions
  • Solid understanding of REST, GraphQL, caching, and client-side data architecture
  • Strong debugging skills and experience resolving production-scale issues
  • Experience with automated testing (Jest, RTL, Cypress) and CI/CD workflows

Good to Have:

  • Experience with Next.js, micro-frontends, or SSR architectures
  • Worked with design systems (Storybook, MUI, Chakra, Radix)
  • Contribution to open-source projects or internal engineering frameworks
  • Knowledge of web security, accessibility, and SEO optimization
  • Background in mentoring engineering teams or owning cross-functional initiatives

Why Join Us:

  • Architect the core frontend foundation of a product used globally
  • Work with world-class engineers building the future of AI-driven development
  • Impact product velocity, quality, and engineering culture at scale
  • Flexible, high-ownership, remote-friendly environment
  • Learn fast, ship faster, and influence the next decade of software creation

Benefits and Perks:

  • 401(k)
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Unlimited Paid Time Off: take the time you need to recharge and come back refreshed
  • Flexible Working Hours: work arrangements that fit your life and commitments

Let's build the future of software together.
