The Stony Brook School is an independent college preparatory school, grades 7-12, that exists to challenge young men and women to know Jesus Christ as Lord, to love others as themselves, and to grow in knowledge and skill in order that they may serve the world through their character and leadership.

About Gravitas

Gravitas is the online program of The Stony Brook School. Through live, teacher-led courses, Gravitas extends SBS's distinctive approach to rigorous academics and Christian formation to students beyond our campus. Role Summary

The Stony Brook School is seeking a dynamic and dedicated part-time Online French Teacher to join Gravitas, the online program of The Stony Brook School. This teacher will provide high-quality French instruction for 2-4 year-long sections spanning four levels of French: French I, French II, French III, and French IV. The role combines synchronous instruction, office hours, asynchronous student support, timely feedback, and relational mentorship in an online environment. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong teaching skill, excellent communication, mature Christian commitment, and an educational philosophy consistent with the mission of The Stony Brook School. This is an exciting opportunity to serve students around the world as part of a talented, mission-driven, and entrepreneurial online learning team.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction and Student Support

  • Teach 2-4 year-long sections of French, spanning French I, II, III, and IV.
  • Provide clear, engaging, and developmentally appropriate instruction through scheduled synchronous class meetings, with meeting days and times to be determined.
  • Offer office hours and asynchronous student support to help students make steady progress in a remote learning environment.
  • Support student growth in French language proficiency, cultural understanding, and disciplined study habits.
  • Engage students relationally and professionally, fostering a positive and mission-aligned online classroom culture.

Assessment and Feedback

  • Grade student assignments, assessments, and projects in a timely manner.
  • Provide constructive, actionable feedback that supports student learning and growth.
  • Meet grading, communication, and project deadlines consistently.
  • Communicate promptly and professionally with students, parents, colleagues, and administrators.

Curriculum and Team Collaboration

  • Contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of the Gravitas French curriculum.
  • Collaborate with other Gravitas teachers and staff in a transparent, feedback-oriented, and growth-minded culture.
  • Participate in relevant meetings, professional development, and planning as assigned.
  • Use technology effectively, including Canvas LMS, online educational tools, video/screencast tools, and other platforms needed for online instruction.

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum of three years of teaching experience.
  • Experience teaching in an online or technology-rich learning environment.
  • Demonstrable Christian commitment and an educational philosophy consistent with The Stony Brook School's mission.
  • Eagerness to serve in a faith-based learning environment that emphasizes faithful Christian scholarship and character formation.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet grading, communication, and project deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to respond promptly and professionally to students, parents, colleagues, and administrators.
  • High energy, strong work ethic, and the ability to engage teenagers effectively in an online environment.

  • Reliable, high-speed internet access.
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity, especially in serving students from diverse global backgrounds.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team of teachers and to give and receive feedback in a transparent, growth-oriented culture.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development and continuous learning.
  • Maturity and stability to thrive in a demanding role.

Preferred

  • Master's degree in French, French Education, or a related field.
  • Experience teaching multiple levels of French, especially French I-IV.
  • Experience teaching students from international, online, or hybrid learning contexts.
