What Does a Remote Freelance Writer Do?

As a remote freelance writer, you work from home to create written content for digital and print mediums. In this independent contract role, you may research information, write blog posts and articles, help write a book, update a website or social media outlet, and provide input on content for a publication. You often work through agencies that find clients and assign content for you to write, but it is also possible to work directly with the client to produce and edit content. The material you write could be as short as a few hundred words or as long as hundreds of pages, depending on the contract. You typically write longer material in stages so it can be edited and reviewed piece by piece.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Freelance Writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Freelance Writer, you need excellent writing, research, and grammar skills, typically supported by a strong portfolio or relevant degree in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with content management systems (like WordPress), SEO tools, and collaboration platforms is often required. Strong self-motivation, time management, and communication skills help build client relationships and meet deadlines. These skills ensure the delivery of high-quality content, client satisfaction, and sustainable success in a competitive freelance market.

How do remote freelance writers typically manage communication and feedback with clients who are in different time zones?

Remote freelance writers often work with clients from various locations, which requires clear communication strategies to ensure timely feedback and project updates. Most writers rely on email, project management tools, and messaging platforms to stay in touch, often setting expectations for response times and deadlines upfront. It's common to schedule regular check-ins or use collaborative documents for ongoing feedback. Being proactive about clarifying requirements and maintaining transparent communication helps prevent misunderstandings and keeps projects on track.

Job description

Job Summary:

Employee will be responsible for review of medical-legal reports, making edits to improve format, fact-check content, and writing medical history summaries based on available medical records. Typical edits will include inserting basic biographical data, correcting Word doc formatting, ensuring accuracy of dates and medical facts cited in the report by checking against the source records, etc. The position may require interaction with clients, our physicians, and your report QA supervisor by phone and email. This job requires successfully managing deadlines as many reports are time-sensitive to hearing dates or other administrative date requirements. After completion of training, a typical day in the role will involve receiving assigned reports from your supervisor with deadlines and priorities noted, with you entrusted to complete all work by the relevant deadlines. In addition to core job functions, this employee will also be responsible for taking on tasks and projects as requested by management.
