What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote FPGA Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote FPGA Engineer, you need a strong background in digital design, proficiency with VHDL/Verilog, and often a degree in electrical or computer engineering. Expertise with FPGA development tools such as Xilinx Vivado or Intel Quartus, and relevant certifications, are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving, independent work ethic, and effective virtual communication skills help you excel in a remote environment. These abilities ensure efficient design, collaboration, and troubleshooting of complex FPGA projects from a distance.

What Are Remote FPGA Jobs?

Remote FPGA jobs allow you to work from home to manage field programmable gate arrays, which are a fundamental part of digital subcircuits that can be configured after manufacturing. You may work as a virtual engineer who sends programming directives over a network, processes data to determine the best gate setup, and determines how to integrate FPGAs into the design of computer hardware. Most work with FPGAs is done in factories that process electronic hardware. Remote employees who work with these devices frequently collaborate with other hardware designers virtually to help ensure each chip meets the company's requirements.

What are remote FPGA jobs?

Remote FPGA jobs involve designing, programming, and testing Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) while working from a location outside of a traditional office setting. Professionals in these roles typically use specialized hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog and collaborate with teams virtually to develop custom digital circuits for various applications, such as telecommunications, aerospace, or consumer electronics. Remote FPGA engineers leverage online tools, cloud-based design environments, and version control systems to manage projects and communicate effectively with colleagues. These positions offer flexibility and can be found with companies that support distributed engineering teams.

What is the difference between Remote Fpga vs Remote ASIC Designer?

Search & Comparison IntentComparing FPGA design roles with similar hardware design jobsUnderstanding differences between FPGA and ASIC design roles

Remote Fpga roles focus on designing and testing FPGA hardware, often requiring FPGA-specific certifications and working in industries like telecommunications and aerospace. Remote ASIC Designer roles involve designing integrated circuits for high-performance applications, with a focus on ASIC-specific tools and processes. Both roles share similar credentials but differ in scope, hardware focus, and industry applications.

What are some common challenges faced when working as a remote FPGA engineer, and how can they be addressed?

As a remote FPGA engineer, one common challenge is effective collaboration with hardware and firmware teams, since hands-on access to lab equipment is often limited. Communication tools and remote access solutions are essential to bridge this gap, allowing for remote debugging and testing. Additionally, clear documentation and frequent virtual meetings help keep everyone aligned on project goals. Proactively seeking feedback and setting up regular check-ins can also ensure the remote workflow remains smooth and productive.

Job description

We're building safety-enhancing technology for aviation that will save lives. Automated aviation systems will enable a future where air transportation is safer, more convenient and fundamentally transformative to the way goods - and eventually people - move around the planet. We are a team of mission-driven engineers with experience across aerospace, robotics and self-driving cars working to make this future a reality.
As a Sr. FPGA Design Engineer at Reliable Robotics you will be a part of the FPGA team which owns the firmware at the heart of the Reliable Robotics phased array radar. Phased array radar systems have historically been reserved for specialized applications, but we're making this technology affordable to enable Detect and Avoid for widespread commercial applications. This role will focus on new advanced operational modes. The passion for revolutionary technology to make aviation safer motivates us to come in every day.
Responsibilities
In your role as a Sr. FPGA Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the entire lifecycle of the FPGA design including product architecture, implementation, synthesis, hardware integration, and testing for our Air to Air Radar solution. You will coordinate with the avionics and radar teams to establish high-level FPGA requirements as well as hardware/software interfaces. You will be responsible for translating MATLAB algorithms to fixed point VHDL implementations, conducting system architecture performance tradeoffs, and verifying real-time performance. You will work in a collaborative development environment including mutual peer review to maintain high product quality.
Basic Success Criteria
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent
  • 8+ years of full-cycle electronics hardware development experience in a professional environment
  • Professional experience designing FPGA digital logic using industry-standard design, simulation, and synthesis tools

Preferred Criteria
  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent
  • Experience working with RADAR or RF transceivers
  • Proven track record of product ownership including development and field support
  • Experience with safety-critical FPGA development (DO-254 level A/B or equivalent industry standard)
  • Experience architecting, implementing, and verifying fixed point DSP algorithms
  • Comfortable with a fast-paced, agile/iterative development life cycle
  • Pragmatic, results-oriented work style

FPGA designers at Reliable Robotics have a unique opportunity to work within a vertically integrated technology stack that extends up to the aircraft level, with a direct impact on the aircraft's capabilities and requirements. They execute a focused mission to establish the foundation of Reliable's technology roadmap. We are a fast-paced team that gets results. With your experience, motivation, skills, and enthusiasm, you'll help the team accomplish amazing things.
