What is a remote forward deployed engineer?

A Remote Forward Deployed Engineer is a technical professional who works remotely to help implement and customize software solutions directly for clients, often acting as a bridge between the engineering team and the customer. They typically travel (virtually or occasionally onsite) to work closely with clients, understand their needs, and ensure the successful deployment and integration of products. Their role often includes troubleshooting, coding, and providing support tailored to each client’s requirements. This position requires strong technical skills, excellent communication, and the ability to adapt solutions for diverse customer environments.

How does a remote forward deployed engineer typically collaborate with client teams and internal stakeholders?

As a Remote Forward Deployed Engineer, you will regularly interact with both client teams and internal product or engineering teams. Collaboration often happens through virtual meetings, shared documentation, and project management tools. You'll be expected to translate client requirements into actionable engineering tasks, communicate technical constraints or possibilities, and coordinate deployments or troubleshooting efforts. Successful engineers in this role are proactive communicators and can bridge the gap between user needs and technical solutions, even when working across time zones.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote forward deployed engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Forward Deployed Engineer, you need strong software engineering skills, problem-solving abilities, and a background in computer science or a related field. Experience with programming languages, cloud platforms, and deployment tools—along with familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and relevant certifications—are typically required. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating across distributed teams and interfacing with clients. These skills and qualities ensure successful implementation of technical solutions tailored to client needs, even in remote and dynamic environments.

Job description

About Us
Join us in building the leading AI Powered Mission Control for Corporate Travel. Some of the world's most recognizable companies, representing over $5T in market value, rely on Clarasight's software to reduce risks, save costs, protect revenues, and manage emissions aligned with business objectives and sustainability goals.
About You
You are passionate about corporate travel, sustainability, and how modern software, especially AI enabled systems, can drive real world change. You thrive in ambiguous, high impact environments where customer problems are not fully defined, data is imperfect, and speed matters. You are equally comfortable engaging executives, designing solutions, and rolling up your sleeves to build, test, and refine technical workflows directly with customers.
About the Role
  • We are looking for a Solutions Architect to own the design, delivery, and evolution of Clarasight's most complex and high impact customer solutions.
  • You will work hands on with enterprise clients to translate ambiguous travel challenges into concrete, AI enabled solutions that deliver measurable results.
  • You will operate at the boundary between customers, product, and data by rapidly prototyping solutions with clients, shaping scalable delivery patterns, and feeding real world learnings directly into Clarasight's product roadmap.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead complex enterprise engagements from discovery through measurable value realization.
  • Translate ambiguous customer problems into clear solution architectures, implementation plans, and success metrics.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to leaders across travel, procurement, finance, IT, and sustainability.
  • Rapidly prototype and iterate on solutions directly with customers to prove value early.
  • Serve as a critical field to product feedback loop, shaping roadmap priorities and reusable capabilities.
  • Partner closely with Sales, Product, Data, and Customer Success to drive retention, expansion, and long term impact.
  • Work hands on with customer data, models, configurations, and analytics workflows to build proof of value implementations, dashboards, and planning models.
  • Experiment with AI (LLMs, agents, workflow automation) to accelerate solution delivery and design AI augmented planning and decision support systems.
  • Build custom integrations and workflows that don't yet exist in the product, balancing speed and rigor as requirements, data, and tools evolve.

You'll Be a Great Fit If You...
  • Have 5-8 years in solution architecture, implementation consulting, or enterprise systems design, with a strong track record across solution consulting, forward deployed engineering, or professional services in enterprise data / SaaS.
  • Are comfortable operating as a forward deployed problem solver, not just an advisor.
  • Are technically fluent and data oriented: you understand data models, metrics, transformations, and system workflows.
  • Can query large datasets using SQL or other tools and languages.
  • Can read, shape, and influence technical implementations even if you are not a full time engineer, and can drive hands on configurations and light development work.
  • Are an exceptional communicator with the ability to translate complex technical and analytical concepts into clear executive narratives.
  • Are energized by early stage environments where ownership, judgment, and speed matter.

Nice to Haves
  • AI fluent and experimental by nature. Eager to test tools, refine workflows, and push automation forward.
  • Experience working alongside AI systems and applying human judgment to automated outputs.
  • Prior exposure to corporate travel, procurement, or sustainability domains.
  • Experience building custom integrations or internal tooling in a forward deployed or professional services capacity.

Diverse Perspectives
We know that innovation thrives on teams where diverse points of view come together to solve hard problems in ways that are just now possible. As such, we explicitly seek people that bring diverse life experiences, diverse educational backgrounds, diverse cultures, and diverse work experiences. Please be prepared to share with us how your perspective will bring something unique and valuable to our team.
