A Remote Forward Deployed Engineer is a technical professional who works remotely to help implement and customize software solutions directly for clients, often acting as a bridge between the engineering team and the customer. They typically travel (virtually or occasionally onsite) to work closely with clients, understand their needs, and ensure the successful deployment and integration of products. Their role often includes troubleshooting, coding, and providing support tailored to each client’s requirements. This position requires strong technical skills, excellent communication, and the ability to adapt solutions for diverse customer environments.

How does a remote forward deployed engineer typically collaborate with client teams and internal stakeholders?

As a Remote Forward Deployed Engineer, you will regularly interact with both client teams and internal product or engineering teams. Collaboration often happens through virtual meetings, shared documentation, and project management tools. You'll be expected to translate client requirements into actionable engineering tasks, communicate technical constraints or possibilities, and coordinate deployments or troubleshooting efforts. Successful engineers in this role are proactive communicators and can bridge the gap between user needs and technical solutions, even when working across time zones.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote forward deployed engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Forward Deployed Engineer, you need strong software engineering skills, problem-solving abilities, and a background in computer science or a related field. Job description

Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, a related specialized area or field is required or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience plus a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree plus a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience.
CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:Ability to obtain a Department of Defense Secret security clearance is required at time of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.
Responsibilities for this Position
What You'll Own
  • Release engineering strategy. Design and build the release process for our software products. Establish how versions are created, validated, promoted, and deployed across development, staging, and production environments.
  • Release automation. Develop and improve CI/CD workflows that make releases repeatable, observable, and low-risk. Define versioning conventions, release gates, approval paths, artifact handling, and deployment promotion practices.
  • Automated testing in the pipeline. Partner with software and AI engineers to build automated testing into delivery pipelines. Ensure unit, integration, regression, security, and other appropriate checks run consistently before software advances to the next environment.
  • Testing rigor and quality gates. Help establish practical standards for test coverage, test reliability, and release readiness. Drive adoption of quality gates that catch issues early without creating unnecessary delivery friction.
  • Release coordination and traceability. Maintain clear visibility into what version is deployed in each environment, what changed between releases, and which validations were completed. Create release records that support troubleshooting, auditability, and informed decision-making.
  • Deployment safety and rollback. Build and validate release and rollback procedures so teams can deploy confidently and recover quickly when a release does not perform as expected.
What You Won't Own
  • Feature development or product backlog prioritization.
  • Day-to-day production operations and incident response.
  • Defining business requirements.
Why This Role Matters
We are building a disciplined, automated way to release software across multiple teams. This role will turn releases from a collection of manual steps into a reliable engineering capability: tested, traceable, repeatable, and continuously improving.
You will work closely with engineers to make quality part of the delivery process itself. The goal is not gatekeeping. It helps teams move quickly because releases are well-tested, predictable, and easy to understand.
In a defense environment, release confidence matters. Knowing what was deployed, how it was validated, and how to recover from an issue is essential to secure and dependable software delivery.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field, plus 8 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience building, operating, or improving CI/CD pipelines for production software.
  • Experience with release engineering practices, including versioning, artifact management, environment promotion, release approvals, and rollback planning.
  • Experience implementing automated testing in CI/CD pipelines, including unit, integration, regression, and security testing as appropriate.
  • Experience with source control and CI/CD platforms such as Git, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps, or similar tools.
  • Strong understanding of software quality practices and the ability to translate testing expectations into practical pipeline controls.
  • Strong documentation and cross-functional communication skills.
  • S. citizenship required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting AI-enabled or data-intensive software systems.
  • Experience in defense, aerospace, or another regulated environment.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code, including Terraform or CloudFormation.
  • Experience with containerized delivery, container registries, and orchestration platforms.
  • Experience introducing or maturing release engineering and software quality practices across multiple engineering teams.
What Sets You Apart
  • You can take an inconsistent release process and turn it into a dependable, automated system.
  • You know how to increase testing rigor while keeping engineering teams productive.
  • You build pipelines that provide useful feedback, not just more steps.
  • You can answer what version is deployed, what changed, and what testing it passed.
  • You treat rollback as a planned capability, not an emergency improvisation.
Details
  • Remote - 100% telework
  • 9/80 schedule
  • Defense industry experience is not required
