What is a remote forward deployed engineer?

A Remote Forward Deployed Engineer is a technical professional who works remotely to help implement and customize software solutions directly for clients, often acting as a bridge between the engineering team and the customer. They typically travel (virtually or occasionally onsite) to work closely with clients, understand their needs, and ensure the successful deployment and integration of products. Their role often includes troubleshooting, coding, and providing support tailored to each client’s requirements. This position requires strong technical skills, excellent communication, and the ability to adapt solutions for diverse customer environments.

How does a remote forward deployed engineer typically collaborate with client teams and internal stakeholders?

As a Remote Forward Deployed Engineer, you will regularly interact with both client teams and internal product or engineering teams. Collaboration often happens through virtual meetings, shared documentation, and project management tools. You'll be expected to translate client requirements into actionable engineering tasks, communicate technical constraints or possibilities, and coordinate deployments or troubleshooting efforts. Successful engineers in this role are proactive communicators and can bridge the gap between user needs and technical solutions, even when working across time zones.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote forward deployed engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Forward Deployed Engineer, you need strong software engineering skills, problem-solving abilities, and a background in computer science or a related field. Experience with programming languages, cloud platforms, and deployment tools—along with familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and relevant certifications—are typically required. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating across distributed teams and interfacing with clients. These skills and qualities ensure successful implementation of technical solutions tailored to client needs, even in remote and dynamic environments.

Job description

Built on service. Powered by people.
Impact exists because a small group of industry leaders believed companies in our space were doing it wrong. Many prioritized margins while the people doing the work and the clients relying on it became an afterthought. Impact was built differently: invest in great people, trust them to do great work, and deliver the kind of service clients remember. That approach helped us grow from a small office technology company into a national managed services provider, while remaining privately owned and people-first.
What makes Impact special is that growth has never come at the expense of the values that got us here. We continue to reinvest in our people, our capabilities, and the opportunities ahead so employees can grow alongside the business. We've built something special, but we're far from finished. The people who join Impact now will help define what comes next.

  • Establish baseline configurations for Azure workloads to ensure consistency and adherence to best practices across client environments.
  • Support modernization and migration initiatives, including assessment, planning, and execution.
  • Implement Infrastructure-as-Code solutions and participate in peer review of IaC modules for security, compliance, and operational consistency.
  • Implement monitoring, diagnostics, governance controls, and policy enforcement within cloud solutions.
  • Collaborate with engineers, operations teams, and stakeholders to align cloud solutions with business needs.
  • Provide architectural input, technical guidance, documentation, and knowledge sharing for projects and operational improvements.

    Qualifications & Experience

    • Minimum 5+ years of experience in cloud engineering, cloud architecture, or enterprise IT roles.
    • Strong experience designing, deploying, and supporting solutions on Microsoft Azure.
    • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure migrations and transferring technical workloads within client environments.
    • Working knowledge of Azure security, networking, identity services, and Identity and Access Management.
    • Proficiency with Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as ARM templates, Bicep, or Terraform.
    • Experience with hybrid infrastructures, Azure Virtual Desktop, Remote Desktop Services, Entra ID Domain Services, Azure Files, Azure Backup, and Azure networking services.
    • Proficiency with scripting and automation using PowerShell and/or Python; experience with Power Automate is a plus.
    • Required or in progress: AZ-305, Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert.
    • Preferred certifications include AZ-104, AZ-500, AZ-700, or SC-300.
    • Preferred experience with AKS, Docker, Nerdio Manager for MSP, Azure SQL, and/or Web App Services.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to operate independently while knowing when to collaborate or escalate.
