Job description

Job Overview:
APTIM is seeking a fire protection and life safety consultant to join our Environmental Compliance and Permitting group to aid our team of engineering professionals serving our Fire Protection Engineering program as well as supporting a variety of other environmental compliance and permitting projects.
APTIM's Environmental Compliance and Permitting group provides a wide variety of environmental compliance and permitting services including RCRA and state hazardous waste, non-RCRA waste, regulated waste, hazardous materials, environmental due diligence, and regulatory review to our commercial clients in retail, distribution, storage, fuel, and industrial markets.
APTIM's Fire Protection Engineering program provides engineering services for our Federal and Department of Defense clients protecting warehousing, fuel facilities, hazardous materials storage, as well as our commercial clients in retail, distribution, storage, fuel and industrial markets.
The successful consultant will apply critical thinking skills to plan, develop, and design successful fire protection strategies for our commercial retail clients. Consultants will often work on multiple projects simultaneously and perform other duties as required. This position offers the opportunity to grow professionally while solving problems in the engineering and construction industry. Consultants will typically serve projects in both the field and the office, as necessary.
Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
  • Thorough understanding of NFPA and IBC codes related to Fire Sprinkler, Fire Alarm, High Piled Storage, and Hazardous Material Storage requirements.
  • Experience with AHJ permitting requirements for high piled storage and hazardous materials storage.
  • Experience with conducting hazardous materials MAQ evaluations.
  • Coordinate internally with fire protection engineers and other execution disciplines and external suppliers both within Company prescribed procedures and direction from the project manager.
  • Assist in the preparation of a variety of technical documents including specifications, drawings, material lists, hazardous materials classifications, permit applications, work method procedures and project reports.
  • Continue to gain knowledge in industry standards from organizations such as the National Fire Protection Association, International Building and Fire Codes, and FM Global.
  • Support the program to observe and ensure practices are compliant with federal, state, and local codes, industry standards, company procedures, and contractual requirements.
  • Gather and organize approved required documents and information to support the successful completion of relevant construction activities/requirements.

Basic Qualifications:
  • NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist Certification - preferred not required
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • AutoCAD and/or REVIT experience - preferred not required
  • Experience with NFPA and IBC code research
  • Experience with state and local AHJ permitting processes
  • Excellent organizational skills

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, a core science (such as geology, chemistry, physics, or biology), engineering, or related area required.
  • Related work experience of 4-6 years.
  • Must have strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Must have strong organizational skills.
  • Strong computer skills required. Must have demonstrated strength and proficiency with Microsoft applications such as MS Excel, MS Word, SharePoint Online, and ability to learn other software applications.
  • May be asked to work in the field and travel to complete work.

As of the date of this posting, a good faith estimate of the current pay salary for this position is $80,000 to $96,857 per year. Compensation depends on several factors including experience, education, key skills, geographic location of the position, client requirements, external market competitiveness, and internal equity among other employees within APTIM.
