What is a remote financial planner?

A remote financial planner is a professional who helps individuals or businesses manage their finances, investments, and long-term financial goals, but does so primarily through virtual channels such as phone calls, video conferencing, and online platforms. They provide services including budgeting advice, retirement planning, tax strategies, and investment recommendations, all without the need to meet clients in person. This remote setup offers flexibility for both the planner and client, often allowing for a broader client base and more convenient scheduling.

How do remote financial planners typically collaborate with clients and colleagues while working offsite?

Remote Financial Planners rely heavily on digital platforms to maintain strong client relationships and collaborate with team members. Video conferencing, secure messaging, and cloud-based financial planning tools are commonly used to conduct meetings, share documents, and track progress on client accounts. Effective communication skills and comfort with technology are essential, as much of the role involves proactive outreach, virtual presentations, and joint planning sessions with colleagues in compliance, investment, or tax advisory. While the work is flexible, staying organized and responsive helps ensure high client satisfaction and smooth teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote financial planner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Financial Planner, you need strong analytical skills, comprehensive knowledge of financial planning, and certification such as CFP (Certified Financial Planner). Familiarity with financial planning software, CRM systems, and secure communication tools is typically required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, self-motivation, and clear virtual communication help build trust and maintain client relationships remotely. These abilities are essential for delivering effective, compliant financial advice and fostering long-term client satisfaction from a distance.

This role will be located at one of Discovery Land Company's Corporate Office locations in Scottsdale, Arizona (hybrid) or can sit remote in the United States.
Discovery Land Company is seeking a full-time, year-round Multi-Door Merchandise Planner, Luxury Boutique to join the Retail Department.
Job Summary:
The Merchandise Planner, Boutique is a critical analytical role within DLC's global retail organization, responsible for driving financial performance across all 14 Rhoze luxury boutiques and Spa Boutique locations. Reporting to the Director of Retail Systems & FP&A, this role owns the planning, forecasting, and open-to-buy management function for the boutique channel - translating buying strategy into disciplined financial execution. This person will partner closely with boutique buyers, the Director of Retail Systems & FP&A, and regional operators to ensure inventory investment is optimized, sell-through targets are met, and the financial model supports DLC's premium brand positioning and rapid global expansion.
Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Financial Planning & OTB Management
    • Own and manage the open-to-buy (OTB) process across all Rhoze and Spa Boutique doors, ensuring disciplined inventory investment aligned to budget and sales plans.
    • Build and maintain seasonal and annual financial plans by door, region, and category including sales, receipts, margin, inventory turn, and IMU/GM% targets.
    • Reconcile OTB plans monthly in Management One; maintain accuracy of financial model inputs and outputs across all boutique locations.
    • Identify and flag OTB variances, supply/demand imbalances, and receipt flow issues proactively.
    • Support buyer-led purchasing decisions with financial guardrails, hindsight data, and scenario modeling.
  • Inventory Analysis & Sell-Through Optimization
    • Monitor sell-through, weeks-of-supply, and inventory productivity at the door, category, and brand level across all boutiques.
    • Develop and distribute regular reporting on inventory health - flagging underperformers, slow movers, and replenishment needs.
    • Collaborate with buyers and area managers to develop markdown and reorder strategies that protect margin while maintaining floor excitement.
    • Analyze seasonal performance versus plan; generate post-season recaps with actionable recommendations for future buys.
  • Buying Calendar & Seasonal Execution
    • Partner with boutique buyers to build and manage the seasonal buying calendar, ensuring OTB, receipt flow, and trade show timing are aligned.
    • Track purchase orders, projected receipts, and on-order commitments across all boutique accounts in Management One.
    • Ensure all buying plan components are accurately entered and updated in a timely manner; maintain integrity of financial reports.
    • Coordinate with operations and finance teams to ensure seamless invoicing, inventory receipt, and reconciliation processes.
  • Reporting & Analytics
    • Build and maintain financial templates, dashboards, and reports that provide visibility to boutique performance for buyers, regional directors, and executive leadership.
    • Develop KPI tracking for boutique channel: revenue vs. plan, margin, turn, IMU, and sell-through by door and category.
    • Support Director of Retail Systems & FP&A with monthly financial report compilation, distribution, and data audits.
    • Provide ad hoc financial analysis and scenario modeling in support of new boutique openings, assortment decisions, and capital planning.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership
    • Serve as the planning and financial resource for boutique buyers - translating merchant strategy into executable, financially sound buying plans.
    • Partner with area managers and regional directors to align field-level inventory decisions with financial plan.
    • Support new Rhoze and Spa Boutique openings with pre-opening OTB setup, receipt planning, and inventory readiness.

Skills & Qualifications:
โ€ข 3-5+ years of merchandise planning, inventory management, or retail financial planning experience; luxury, multi-door, or boutique retail preferred.
โ€ข Strong proficiency in open-to-buy management and retail math (IMU, GM%, turn, sell-through, weeks-of-supply).
โ€ข Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required.
โ€ข Knowledge of or experience with Management One, Power BI, Velixo, and/or Sage Intacct a plus.
โ€ข High attention to detail with ability to manage and reconcile data across multiple doors and categories simultaneously.
โ€ข Strong analytical and communication skills - able to translate financial data into clear insights and action for merchant and operator partners.
โ€ข Comfortable working remotely and across time zones in a fast-scaling global organization.
โ€ข Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Retail Merchandising, or related field preferred.
โ€ข Financial Rigor - Brings discipline and accuracy to the OTB process; owns the numbers and protects margin.
โ€ข Merchant Partnership - Understands buying strategy and serves as a trusted financial counterpart to the boutique buying team.
โ€ข Systems Proficiency - Navigates and optimizes retail planning systems; comfortable building and maintaining Excel-based financial tools.
โ€ข Communication - Translates complex financial data into accessible insights for cross-functional partners and leadership.
โ€ข Proactive Problem Solving - Identifies inventory risks and opportunities ahead of the curve; brings solutions, not just data.
โ€ข Scalability Mindset - Able to build processes and tools that can grow with a rapidly expanding boutique portfolio.
Additional Requirements
  • Positive attitude, professional demeanor, and exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to deliver service to members, guests, and team members.
  • Must be able to work flexible work hours/schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Long hours may be required due to business demands.
