Remote Fema Disaster Contractor information

What is a remote FEMA disaster contractor?

Remote FEMA Disaster Contractors are independent professionals or companies hired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide support for disaster response and recovery efforts from a remote location. Their tasks can range from processing claims and reviewing damage assessments to providing technical support and data entry, all without being physically present at the disaster site. These roles are crucial in ensuring timely and effective assistance to affected communities while allowing the workforce to operate safely and efficiently from anywhere. Contractors may work on short-term assignments, depending on the scale and duration of the disaster event.

What are some common challenges faced by remote FEMA disaster contractors, and how can they be addressed?

Remote FEMA Disaster Contractors often encounter challenges such as rapidly changing project scopes, tight deadlines, and the need to coordinate with multiple stakeholders across different locations. Additionally, working remotely can present communication hurdles, especially when collaborating with on-site teams and government agencies. To address these challenges, successful contractors utilize strong organizational skills, maintain proactive and transparent communication, and leverage digital collaboration tools to stay aligned with project goals and timelines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote FEMA disaster contractor?

To thrive as a Remote FEMA Disaster Contractor, you typically need expertise in emergency management, project coordination, and an understanding of FEMA policies, often supported by relevant experience or certifications such as FEMA’s Independent Study courses. Familiarity with FEMA’s Grants Portal, incident management software, and remote collaboration tools is crucial for effective operations. Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills help contractors navigate complex situations and coordinate with multiple stakeholders. These competencies ensure accurate, timely disaster response and recovery, meeting federal requirements and supporting affected communities efficiently.

Senior Software Developer – AWS Professional Services
Location: Chantilly, VA (Preferred)
Work Arrangement: Flexible – onsite, hybrid, or remote options may be considered
Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship required
Security Clearance: Active Top Secret/SCI clearance preferred

ABOUT SBS

Strategic Business Systems, Inc. (SBS) delivers AWS-aligned mission-critical cloud, cybersecurity, software engineering, and data modernization solutions to the U.S. Department of Defense, the Intelligence Community, and federal civilian agencies.

We hire engineers, architects, and consultants who want to do hands-on work on high-impact national-security programs while collaborating directly with AWS Professional Services. Our culture is technical, lean, and clearance-friendly: we invest in certifications, retain talent through long-duration prime engagements, and provide a comprehensive benefits package.

POSITION SUMMARY

SBS is growing its AWS Professional Services delivery team and is hiring experienced senior software developers. You will design and deliver scalable, secure, cloud-native applications for federal customers, collaborating directly with AWS architects on mission-critical solutions.

An active TS/SCI clearance is preferred. U.S. citizen candidates without a current clearance may be considered for unclassified delivery work where contract requirements permit.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable and secure software applications on AWS.

  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle: requirements, design, coding, testing, deployment, and sustainment.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with AWS architects, customer leads, and other vendor teams to deliver customer-aligned solutions.

  • Modernize legacy systems by rearchitecting them as cloud-native, microservice-based applications.

  • Implement code-quality, performance, and security best practices including peer review, static analysis, and threat modeling.

  • Integrate services and data flows across distributed systems.

  • Diagnose and resolve technical issues across development and production environments.

  • Contribute to technical documentation and architecture decision records.

  • Operate within Agile / Scrum or other iterative development frameworks.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • U.S. Citizenship.

  • Five (5) or more years of professional software engineering experience building and maintaining enterprise-scale applications.

  • Proficiency in at least one modern language: Java, Python, C#, or JavaScript / TypeScript.

  • Demonstrated experience with cloud-based or distributed systems.

  • Strong knowledge of software-engineering best practices: version control, automated testing, continuous integration.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field — or equivalent professional experience.

  • Clear written and verbal communication skills for technical documentation, stakeholder coordination, and customer-facing delivery.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Active Top Secret / SCI clearance.

  • Hands-on AWS experience or strong experience with another major public cloud (Azure, GCP).

  • DevOps and automated-deployment experience (CI/CD pipelines, IaC).

  • Federal or defense-customer delivery experience.

  • Modern architecture experience: microservices, event-driven systems, serverless.

  • Agile / Scrum delivery experience.

CERTIFICATIONS

Required:

  • None mandatory.

Preferred:

  • AWS Certified Developer — Associate

  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect — Associate or Professional

  • Certified Scrum Developer or equivalent

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Primarily remote home-office environment. Occasional travel to Chantilly, VA or customer sites. Some collaboration may require working in classified facilities once clearance is granted.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

SBS offers a comprehensive total-rewards package, including a market competitive salary along with:

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage; HSA-eligible plan options available

  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match (vesting schedule per Plan Document)

  • Paid Time Off, federal holidays, and floating holiday for personal observance

  • Annual professional development support for AWS certifications, training, and conferences

  • Employee referral program where applicable and documented by program policy

  • Life, AD&D, and short- / long-term disability insurance

  • Telework and flexible-schedule support where mission and contract permit

  • Mission-focused federal contractor supporting national-security customers
