What is a remote EPC project manager?

A Remote EPC Project Manager oversees engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects from a remote location, coordinating teams, resources, and project timelines using digital tools. Their responsibilities include planning, budgeting, risk management, and ensuring that project milestones are met efficiently. By working remotely, they manage communication between stakeholders, vendors, and on-site personnel, ensuring successful project execution without being physically present at the project site.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote EPC project manager?

To thrive as a Remote EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) Project Manager, you need a solid background in engineering or construction management, along with proven experience in overseeing complex EPC projects. Familiarity with project management software (such as Primavera P6 or MS Project), remote collaboration tools, and relevant certifications like PMP are typically required. Outstanding communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills help you effectively coordinate distributed teams and manage stakeholder expectations. These competencies are crucial for delivering projects on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards while navigating the challenges of remote management.

What are the primary challenges faced by remote EPC project managers and how can they be addressed?

Remote EPC Project Managers often face challenges such as coordinating across multiple time zones, ensuring clear communication among diverse teams, and tracking project milestones without in-person supervision. Leveraging collaboration tools, maintaining regular virtual meetings, and establishing clear communication protocols are essential to overcome these hurdles. Additionally, successful managers prioritize proactive risk management and build strong relationships with both clients and contractors to keep projects on track and within budget.

Reporting to the Director, Program Management Office-HUB North America, you will lead multiple, interrelated projects within the NAM Power Transformers Group. These projects are delivered in close partnership with a key strategic customer and executed across several Hitachi Energy factories, giving you exposure to a broad manufacturing network and diverse stakeholders.
In this role, you will turn strategy into action-bringing structure to complexity, aligning teams around common goals, and ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget. Along the way, you'll contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, strengthen best practices, and grow your project management capabilities in a supportive, inclusive, and dynamic environment.

  • Serve as the primary customer contact and escalation point for project issues.
  • Coordinate activities across factories, service teams, and external partners.
  • Develop and maintain project plans covering scope, budget, schedule, and risk.
  • Identify, analyze, and mitigate project risks while sharing lessons learned.
  • Support contract negotiations, change management, and claims resolution.
  • Build strong relationships with customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Responsible to ensure compliance with applicable external and internal regulations, procedures, and guidelines.
Your background
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business Administration, or equivalent experience. Minimum 5 years of relevant project management experience.
  • PMP certification preferred; ability to achieve Hitachi Energy PM certification within 2 years.
  • Experience coordinating and leading remote, multilocation teams.
  • Proven success managing scope, cost, schedules, quality, and vendors.
  • Authorization to work in the United States (no relocation or sponsorship).
