What is a remote EPC project engineer?

A Remote EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) Project Engineer is a professional responsible for overseeing and coordinating engineering projects from a remote location. They manage the planning, design, procurement, and construction phases of projects, ensuring all tasks are completed according to technical specifications, budget, and schedule. Working remotely, they use digital tools to collaborate with teams, monitor project progress, and communicate with stakeholders. This role is common in industries like energy, infrastructure, and manufacturing, where projects are complex and require coordination across different locations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote EPC project engineer?

A Remote EPC Project Engineer should have a strong background in engineering (typically a bachelor’s degree), project management experience, and knowledge of the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) process. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project or Primavera), CAD tools, and relevant certifications like PMP are often required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to work independently are crucial soft skills in this remote role. These competencies ensure successful project delivery, effective remote collaboration, and adherence to technical and regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges faced by remote EPC project engineers, and how can they be effectively managed?

Remote EPC Project Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multidisciplinary teams across different time zones, ensuring clear communication with stakeholders, and maintaining project timelines without frequent site visits. To effectively manage these challenges, strong digital collaboration skills, proactive scheduling, and the use of project management tools are essential. Regular virtual meetings and clear documentation help keep everyone aligned, ensuring project milestones are met and quality standards maintained.

Join Energy Drive Systems
At Energy Drive Systems, we help some of the world's most energy-intensive industries reduce operating costs, improve reliability and accelerate decarbonisation through advanced motor control and energy optimisation solutions.
Our engineers work alongside industrial clients to solve complex challenges across sectors including mining, metals, cement, water, manufacturing and other heavy industries. As our North American business continues to grow, we're looking for an experienced Energy Solutions Engineer to join our team.
This is an opportunity to work on technically challenging projects while collaborating with a highly experienced international engineering and commercial team.
About the Role
As an Energy Solutions Engineer, you'll play a critical role in identifying, developing and delivering industrial energy efficiency opportunities across North America.
Working closely with our commercial, engineering and project delivery teams, you'll assess customer systems, develop technical solutions and support projects from the earliest stages of opportunity development through to project handover.
This is a customer-facing role requiring a strong engineering background, commercial awareness and the ability to build trusted relationships with industrial clients.
What You'll Be Doing
  • Investigating industrial energy efficiency opportunities through customer site visits and technical assessments.
  • Evaluating electrical systems, motor applications and industrial processes.
  • Developing energy models, performance calculations and technical feasibility studies.
  • Designing solutions involving medium voltage motors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), pumps, fans and industrial control systems.
  • Supporting the preparation of technical proposals and customer presentations.
  • Working closely with commercial teams to develop opportunities and convert projects.
  • Collaborating with Project Engineering and Maintenance teams to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Building long-term relationships with customer engineering teams and becoming a trusted technical advisor.
  • Providing technical support throughout the project lifecycle.

Requirements
  • A degree in Electrical Engineering (preferred) or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Around 5-10+ years' experience within heavy industrial environments.
  • Strong knowledge of medium voltage motors, VFDs, pumps, fans and rotating equipment.
  • Experience developing technical solutions for industrial applications.
  • Experience with energy modelling, system performance analysis or equipment sizing.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • The ability to work independently within a remote environment.
  • A willingness to travel across North America.

Experience within heavy industry is highly desirable, including sectors such as:
  • Oil & Gas
  • Mining
  • Metals
  • Cement
  • Water & Wastewater
  • Heavy Manufacturing

Experience with industrial motor systems, VFDs, pumps, fans or rotating equipment is highly advantageous.
We're looking for engineers who:
  • Take ownership.
  • Enjoy solving complex technical problems.
  • Act quickly when opportunities arise.
  • Build strong relationships with customers.
  • Thrive in collaborative teams.
  • Are curious, adaptable and eager to learn.
  • Want to make a meaningful impact across industrial energy projects.

Benefits
At Energy Drive Systems, you'll become part of an entrepreneurial, international team committed to improving industrial energy performance across the globe.
You'll have the opportunity to:
  • Work on technically challenging industrial projects.
  • Collaborate with experienced engineering and commercial professionals.
  • Influence projects from concept through delivery.
  • Contribute to the decarbonisation of heavy industry.
  • Grow your technical and commercial expertise within a rapidly expanding business.

If you're looking for a role where your engineering expertise can make a tangible difference to customers and industry, we'd love to hear from you.
