Remote Environmental Software Engineer information

What is a remote environmental software engineer?

A Remote Environmental Software Engineer is a professional who develops and maintains software applications focused on solving environmental challenges, such as climate modeling, pollution tracking, or resource management. They work remotely, often collaborating with multidisciplinary teams from different locations. Their responsibilities typically include designing, coding, testing, and optimizing software tools that help organizations monitor and address environmental issues. This role requires strong programming skills, knowledge of environmental science, and the ability to work effectively in virtual environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote environmental software engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Environmental Software Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science, environmental science, and programming languages such as Python, R, or Java, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with GIS tools, environmental modeling software, cloud-based collaboration platforms, and possibly certifications like AWS or GIS Professional are typically required. Strong problem-solving, self-motivation, and effective communication skills help you navigate remote teamwork and complex environmental data challenges. These abilities are crucial for developing accurate, scalable solutions that address real-world environmental issues while collaborating efficiently from a distance.

How does collaborating with cross-functional teams typically work for a remote environmental software engineer?

As a Remote Environmental Software Engineer, collaboration with cross-functional teams is primarily facilitated through digital communication tools such as video conferencing, project management platforms, and shared documentation. You will often work closely with environmental scientists, data analysts, and other engineers to translate technical requirements into software solutions. Regular virtual meetings and asynchronous updates help ensure everyone stays aligned, and clear documentation is vital for effective teamwork. Adapting to different time zones and communication styles can be challenging but is essential for project success.

Torc Robotics

Job description

Meet the Team:ย

Torc's BI team partners across the business to bring visibility and reporting that help leadership and teams make faster, better-informed decisions. This is an exciting opportunity to help define how data engineering and BI work together at Torc, with real influence over the architecture and tooling.ย

What You'll Do:ย

  • Design, build, and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines that power our data architecture.ย
  • Structure and optimize tables and views to support fast, reliable reporting and dashboard performance.ย
  • Build data quality checks, validation, and documentation so stakeholders can trust the numbers behind leadership and board-level reporting.ย
  • Partner with BI analysts and business stakeholders to understand how data will be consumed downstream, translating reporting needs into data models and pipelines.
  • Support and help evolve leadership-critical deliverables, including the enterprise SPI dashboard and consolidated TES/WBR metrics reporting.ย
  • Help migrate existing AWS/Athena-based data delivery to our Databricks platform.ย
  • Define, instrument, and maintain business KPIs from scratch using SQL and Python.ย
  • Contribute to hands-on dashboard development as interest and BI tooling needs align.

What You'll Need to Succeed:ย

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related field, with 4+ years of professional experience in data engineering or software engineering (equivalent experience considered).
  • Hands-on data engineering experience - building and maintaining ETL pipelines, data quality checks, and structuring tables vs. views for reporting performance.ย
  • Proficiency in Python,ย PySpark, or similar for pipeline / ETL development, and experience with pandas, numpy, or other data analysis tooling.ย
  • Strong SQL or similar skills.ย
  • Understanding of how data is consumed downstream and willingness to work with consumers on improvements. ย
  • Experience with BI tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or QuickSight.ย
  • Comfort working with ambiguous, evolving requirements and partnering directly with stakeholders across the business.ย

Bonus Points:ย

  • Experience with the Databricks platform, particularly for serving data, visualizations, and jobs.
  • AWS experience, particularly Athena, Glue, or other managed data services.ย
  • Knowledge of relational, NoSQL, vector, and data warehouse architectures.ย
  • Hands-on dashboard-building experience, or strong interest in developing it.ย
  • Experience scaling data for ML/AI workloads (e.g., Ray).ย
  • Background in automotive, AV, robotics, or other safety-critical data environments.ย

Work Location:ย

Ann Arbor, MI is the hiring hub for this role; remote candidates are considered.ย
