Job description

The exciting world of scientific research is fueled by people with a passion for solving complex problems. At Cayuse, we are committed to our customers' success by empowering organizations to conduct globally connected research that advances their impact on science, discovery and society. We build on that commitment with proven, integrated and easy-to-use technology that delivers exceptional value, and world class service and support that accelerates outcomes.

But we are more than just an empowering platform powered by advanced technologies. We are a collaboration of exceptional, highly skilled people with multi-disciplinary expertise, and are building our team to support our ambitious growth plans. Cayuse's foundational strength comes from our customer and employee focused values and commitment to industry-leading solutions. It's an exciting time to become a key member of our growing team.

Join our remote-first culture as the Lead Software Engineer, a critical, hands-on role where you will serve as the Primary Architect and technical guide for our core product suite.

You will partner directly with senior leadership to own the technical roadmap, define and develop complex, large-scale software solutions, and drive high-level integration strategy decisions. This role demands technical excellence and leadership, requiring you to contribute high-quality code (50% hands-on) while providing deep mentorship and direction to our teams. You will be the driving force behind adopting modern practices like AI-assisted development and DevSecOps, ensuring our services are resilient, scalable, and delighting our customers.

Key Responsibilities

As the Technical Lead for the Team, you will be the primary architect and hands-on guide for our software solutions. Your focus will be on technical excellence, architectural integrity, and mentoring, rather than people management.

  • Technical Vision & Architecture: Own the technical roadmap for the product suite. Partner with architects to model complex systems, reduce technical debt, and drive high-level integration strategy decisions.
  • Hands-on Development (50%): Lead by example by contributing high-quality code to our most complex SaaS products. You will implement long-term technical solutions and "go deep" to resolve systemic architectural challenges.
  • Engineering Excellence: Drive the adoption of modern industry best practices, including AI-assisted development (e.g., Copilot/Claude), DevSecOps, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) to ensure security and scalability. Own quality through automated testing and Test-Driven Development (TDD).
  • Technical Mentorship: Provide deep technical guidance and unblock offshore and nearshore teams. You will lead code reviews and design sessions to foster a culture of "getting software done right."
  • Cross-Functional Strategy: Act as the technical bridge between product management, quality engineering, and DevOps. You will translate complex product requirements into actionable, high-performance technical designs.
  • System Ownership: Drive long-term corrective actions for performance and reliability issues, ensuring our services are resilient and "delighting our customers."

Qualifications

  • Core Experience
    • 9+ years of professional experience developing, maintaining, and innovating large-scale, high-availability web applications and services.
    • At least 2 years serving in a hands-on technical lead or principal engineering capacity, driving technical decisions and solutions to completion.
    • BS/MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or Mathematics (or equivalent deep technical work experience).
  • Technical Expertise
    • Architecture & Cloud Strategy: Strong, demonstrated understanding and practical application of software design and architecture principles, patterns, and long-term integration strategy decisions.
    • Cloud & Infrastructure: Expert experience with AWS, including cloud architecture, serverless programming, DevOps practices, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC).1
    • Full-Stack Development: Extensive experience with the Microsoft technology stack, including full-stack development using ASP.NET MVC, .NET Framework, ASP.NET Core, .NET Core, Angular, and Typescript.
    • Data Management: Experience with relational databases (Microsoft SQL Server preferred) and NoSQL databases.
  • Leadership and Communication
    • Demonstrated ability to provide deep technical guidance and mentorship, lead design sessions, and conduct high-quality code reviews.
    • Excellent cross-functional communication skills, with proven success in translating complex technical issues and architectural designs to technical, product, and leadership audiences.
    • A strong commitment to driving engineering excellence and adopting modern industry practices, including DevSecOps and AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Copilot/Claude).
    • Meticulous attention to detail and a steadfast commitment to producing reliable, resilient software products.
