Job description

Overview

Colliers Engineering & Design is looking for a Staff Scientist to join our Environmental team in the state of New York! This position can be located in our Albany, Syracuse, or Rochester offices, or in a remote arrangement in Binghamton. The essential functions of this professional are to investigate, characterize and design remedial measures for environmental concerns that create risks for human health and the environment. In addition, you will assist with solutions to meet the regulatory clean-up standards appropriate for new construction and site redevelopment.


The Staff Scientist will support a wide range of environmental projects through field investigations, technical analyses, and regulatory compliance activities. Working alongside experienced environmental professionals and multidisciplinary project teams, this role will contribute to the successful execution of projects by performing environmental assessments, collecting field data, preparing technical documentation, and ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.


The ideal candidate will demonstrate sound technical judgment, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced consulting environment. This position offers opportunities for professional growth through specialized environmental training, technical certifications, and participation in a diverse portfolio of environmental consulting projects.


Responsibilities
  • Make decisions with little oversight regarding environmental complexities and methods.
  • Analyze data, reports, maps, drawings, tests, etc. to plan, design and implement a project.
  • Complete initial preparation of reports, specifications, plans, schedules and designs for projects.
  • Assist in the assembly of pricing, estimating, scoping and marketing strategies for pro-posed projects.
  • Follow standards of practice from state and local officials.
  • Adhere to company and client QA/QC standards.
  • Provide quality control to draft documents and drawings.
  • Work with project designers to determine the environmental impact of project.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other design and technical professionals who are part of the project team.
  • Perform field inspections, research, measurements, well monitoring, operations & maintenance of remedial equipment and sample collection.
  • Coordinate submission of lab samples.
  • Complete client specific safety training and attend client meetings as required.
  • Provide Phase I & II Environmental Site Assessments and investigations.
  • Soil and groundwater sampling. 
  • Conduct asbestos inspections and quantifications, EPA and state regulated mold inspections and quantifications.
  • May serve as on-site project representative.
  • Establish & maintain positive relationships with co-workers, support and build others on the team and across disciplines/offices.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geology or Environmental Sciences.
  • 2-5 years of experience in Environmental Science or applicable technical field.
  • Experience with asbestos & contamination required.
  • 40 Hour HAZWOPER Certification required.
  • 8-Hour OSHA HAZWOPER annual update required.
  • OSHA 10-Hour Safety & Health Standards for Construction preferred.
  • Willingness to undertake training as necessary to fill environmental needs.
  • May be required to become certified asbestos inspector, asbestos project monitor, mold assessor, or lead assessor in various states and perform tasks as part of these certifications.
  • Willingness to work in varying work conditions. 
  • May be required to become rail certified to perform environmental field tasks for federal rail work projects.
  • A valid Driver’s License is required.
  • Ability to read, write and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job-related communications and verbal instructions and interactions.

Compensation: $65,100 to $81,000 per year (depending on qualifications)
