Remote Environmental Journalism information

What is remote environmental journalism?

Remote environmental journalism is the practice of reporting on environmental issues, trends, and events while working from a location outside a traditional newsroom or onsite reporting location. Journalists may gather information, conduct interviews, and write articles using digital tools, often collaborating with sources and editors virtually. This approach allows for broader coverage of global environmental topics and provides flexibility for journalists to work from anywhere. It is especially useful for covering remote or inaccessible regions and for adapting to travel restrictions or safety concerns.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote environmental journalist?

To thrive as a Remote Environmental Journalist, you need strong research, writing, and investigative skills, often supported by a degree in journalism, communications, or environmental science. Familiarity with digital publishing platforms, multimedia tools, and data visualization software is typically required. Outstanding communication, self-motivation, and the ability to interpret complex environmental issues for a broad audience are crucial soft skills. These abilities are essential for producing accurate, impactful stories that inform the public and drive environmental awareness from a remote setting.

How do remote environmental journalists typically collaborate with editors and field reporters to ensure accurate and timely coverage?

Remote environmental journalists often collaborate with editors and field reporters through digital communication tools like email, video calls, and shared project management platforms. Regular check-ins and editorial meetings help align on story angles, verify facts, and address emerging developments. While the role is remote, strong communication and organizational skills are essential to coordinate interviews, gather data, and maintain project timelines. This collaborative structure enables journalists to produce well-researched, impactful stories, even when not physically present in the newsroom or on location.

Job description

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Senior Communications Manager is a critical individual contributor role reporting to the Head of Communications. Part relationship-builder, part storyteller, part PR tactician, your job is to tell our story, and make sure the world's top business and tech journalists, podcasters, and conference organizers think of Cresta first.

You'll drive earned media day to day: creating and nurturing reporter relationships, deepening our thought leadership profile, and turning Cresta's momentum into coverage that builds our brand and helps to grow the business.

Partnering closely with the Head of Communications, you'll play a key role in PR strategy and execution. You'll spot stories and moments where Cresta's story deserves to be told and make sure that it is. You'll perform media outreach, draft press releases and other materials that carry our message, prep executives for interviews, and work on high-priority announcements, milestones, speaking opportunities, and award submissions.

This role is for someone who has built meaningful media relationships, operated inside a fast-growing tech company, and knows how to tell a great story. If you are excited to play a role in building the leader in customer experience AI, and have the instincts and the drive to help Cresta break through the noise, we want to talk to you.

This role is based in San Francisco, London, or New York, and requires in-office presence.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build and deepen relationships with top-tier business and tech journalists, editors, and podcasters
  • Drive earned media strategy for major announcements, including corporate news, partnerships, product milestones, and industry leadership moments
  • Prepare executives and subject matter experts for media and speaking engagements.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Marketing, Legal, HR, Product, and more to align communications with business objectives
  • Drive thought leadership that elevates Cresta
  • Spot emerging narratives in AI/CX/enterprise tech early and identify thought leadership and commentary opportunities
  • Draft communications materials, including press releases, presentations, blog posts, and social copy
  • Identify and secure meaningful industry awards and speaking opportunities

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 6+ years of progressive communications experience, with significant time in corporate communications roles at high-growth B2B AI/technology companies
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills: you are among the sharpest writers in any room, with the ability to adapt voice across audiences and formats
  • Sharp instincts for messaging and narrative: you know how to find the story inside any business update
  • Established relationships with journalists, editors, and podcasters covering enterprise tech and AI
  • Outstanding media skills: you have a pulse of the trending market topics and understand how to tap into those across traditional and emerging media
  • Strong project management skills; able to manage multiple high-priority workstreams simultaneously without sacrificing quality
  • Track record of partnering effectively with leaders across departments on high-priority initiatives
  • Comfort executing on a high volume of projects without a large supporting team

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building narratives for a company transitioning from challenger to category leader
  • Experience in customer experience technology or CX AI

PERKS & BENEFITS

  • Medical, dental, and vision plans that are designed to fit you and your family's needs.
  • Flexible vacation time to promote a healthy work-life blend.
  • Paid parental leave to support you and your family.
  • Monthly gym & phone allowance
  • Work from home office stipend to help you succeed in a remote environment.
  • Lunches and dinners included for in-office employees via DoorDash

Salary Range$150K to $190K + equity
