Remote Environmental Accounting information

What are some common challenges faced by remote environmental accountants, and how can they be addressed?

Remote environmental accountants often face challenges related to accessing site-specific data and collaborating with field teams, as much of the environmental data is gathered onsite. To overcome this, strong communication skills and proficiency with digital collaboration tools are essential. Additionally, keeping up-to-date with evolving environmental regulations can be demanding, so it's important to regularly participate in virtual trainings and industry webinars. Building strong working relationships with both internal teams and external stakeholders helps ensure accurate and timely reporting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote environmental accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Environmental Accountant, you need a solid background in accounting or finance, knowledge of environmental regulations, and typically a relevant degree such as a bachelor's in accounting or environmental science. Familiarity with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, SAP), environmental reporting tools, and certifications like CPA or CMA are often required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective virtual communication skills help you excel in remote collaboration and compliance tasks. These abilities ensure accurate financial reporting, regulatory adherence, and effective teamwork in a distributed work environment.

What is remote environmental accounting?

Remote environmental accounting involves tracking, analyzing, and reporting on a company's environmental impacts, such as carbon emissions and resource usage, while working from a location outside the traditional office. These professionals use specialized software and data analysis tools to assess sustainability practices and ensure regulatory compliance. The remote aspect allows for flexibility and often requires strong digital communication and collaboration skills. Environmental accountants play a crucial role in helping organizations minimize their ecological footprint and report on sustainability goals.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Accounting Manager based in Netherlands.

This is a fully remote, full-time leadership opportunity for an experienced accounting professional ready to take ownership of a growing construction and roofing business's financial operations. You will oversee the full accounting cycle while providing financial insight that supports important business decisions. The role combines hands-on accounting expertise with responsibility for job costing, revenue recognition, financial reporting, compliance, and process improvement. You will work across residential, commercial, and federally funded projects, managing multiple priorities in a fast-moving environment. The position also offers the opportunity to strengthen controls, optimize accounting technology, and contribute to the development of the wider finance function. It is well suited to a proactive professional who brings sound judgment, strong communication, and a genuine sense of ownership.

Accountabilities
  • Own the full accounting cycle, including account reconciliations, month-end and year-end close, and financial reporting for leadership.
  • Oversee job costing and work-in-progress (WIP) schedules across multiple active construction projects, ensuring accuracy and identifying profitability trends.
  • Manage percentage-of-completion revenue recognition and progress billing across residential, commercial, and federally funded projects.
  • Provide financial guidance to leadership and support sound decision-making by balancing accuracy, compliance, operational priorities, and business needs.
  • Lead the integration and optimization of external applications with QuickBooks Online to improve accounting workflows and efficiency.
  • Oversee accounts payable and receivable, expense management, subcontractor payments, and vendor and client interactions, resolving discrepancies proactively.
  • Support compliance requirements for federally funded projects, including certified payroll and prevailing wage documentation, with training available where required.
  • Review and guide accounting support staff or bookkeepers as the finance team expands, providing coaching and feedback.
  • Partner with leadership on budgeting, forecasting, cash flow planning, and other financial planning activities.
  • Strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, procedures, and reporting processes as the business grows.
  • Use digital collaboration and accounting tools effectively, including QuickBooks Online, Slack, Google Workspace, Zoom, and other relevant platforms.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and AI applications and champion solutions that can make accounting processes more efficient and effective.
Requirements
  • 5-7+ years of accounting experience with U.S.-based companies, including demonstrated ownership of a full-cycle accounting function; CPA certification is strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of construction or job-costed accounting, with the ability to manage accounting activities across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Experience working with external stakeholders and cross-functional teams, ideally within public accounting, client-facing, construction accounting, or a similar environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound financial judgments and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, growing organization.
  • Previous experience reviewing, supervising, coaching, or guiding accounting professionals is an advantage, even without a formal management title.
  • Familiarity with federally funded or government project accounting, including certified payroll, prevailing wage, or DCAA-related requirements, is highly desirable but not mandatory.
  • Strong proficiency with QuickBooks Online, Slack, Google Sheets, Google Docs, Zoom, Google Meet, and Google Drive.
  • Experience integrating external applications with QuickBooks Online is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with Bill.com, ClickUp, Gusto, Ramp, or construction-specific platforms such as JobNimbus, AccuLynx, or similar tools is a plus.
  • Awareness of practical AI applications in accounting and a willingness to adopt new technologies are advantageous.
  • Full professional fluency in English, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain complex financial matters clearly to non-finance leaders, project managers, and operational teams.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, organization, and time-management skills, particularly in a remote environment.
  • A proactive, solutions-oriented approach, with strong independent problem-solving abilities and the confidence to make decisions and take ownership of outcomes.
  • High integrity, curiosity, adaptability, and a strong bias toward action.
Benefits
  • Competitive salary paid in USD, based on experience.
  • Fully remote working arrangement with the flexibility to work from a professional home setup.
  • 10 paid vacation days per year.
  • U.S. national holidays included as paid holidays.
  • High visibility and direct access to leadership.
  • Significant opportunity to influence and improve the accounting function as the business grows.
  • Supportive and collaborative remote working culture.
  • Opportunity to work across residential, commercial, and federally funded construction projects.
  • Exposure to modern accounting technologies, workflow automation, and emerging AI applications.
