What does a remote entry level web developer do?

A remote entry-level web developer collaborates with a team of junior, mid-level, and senior web developers to code a computer program or web application. Unlike in-house web developers, remote entry-level web developers work from home or another remote location outside of the office. As a remote entry-level developer, your duties include running tests and debugging applications, submitting pull requests with ideas of different approaches to a problem, and pairing programming to develop software solutions to meet business needs. You must spend time learning your company’s code base and workflow. As you gain the knowledge base and skills to understand the company’s systems, you can take on additional responsibilities and more complex assignments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote entry level web developer?

To thrive as a Remote Entry Level Web Developer, you need a solid understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and foundational programming principles, often backed by a degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, basic knowledge of frameworks such as React or Angular, and exposure to collaborative platforms like GitHub are commonly expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective written communication help you stand out, especially when working independently. These skills and qualities are crucial to efficiently deliver quality code, collaborate remotely, and adapt to evolving project requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by remote entry level web developers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote entry level web developers often encounter challenges such as feeling isolated from the team, managing their time effectively without direct supervision, and staying updated with fast-evolving technologies. To overcome these, it's important to proactively communicate with team members using collaboration tools, set clear daily goals, and participate in virtual meetings or code reviews. Additionally, leveraging online resources and seeking feedback can help accelerate learning and integration into the development team.

Can I be a remote entry level web developer with no experience?

Remote entry level web developer positions often do not require extensive experience and may accept candidates with basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript gained through self-study or online courses. Building a portfolio of projects and learning relevant tools like version control can improve chances of securing such roles. Employers may also value problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn over formal experience at this level.

Job description

Brand & Product Designer (US, Remote, Part-Time)About Rapptr Labs

Rapptr Labs is a NYC-based digital product agency. For 15 years we have designed and built mobile and web products that people actually use, including two Google Play Apps of the Year and apps serving more than 10 million monthly active users. We have shipped over 50 products across consumer, B2B, and enterprise. We treat every client's product like it is our own.

The Role

We are changing what design looks like at Rapptr. AI now handles a large share of standard interface production, so we are hiring for the part AI cannot do well, which is original visual thinking. We want a designer who is first and foremost a strong graphic designer and artist. You should be able to create brand identities, logos, and custom graphics from a blank page, and then use AI tools to move quickly through the standard product UI work that used to take up most of a designer's week.

You will work directly with our team and clients to shape how products look and feel across iOS, Android, and web. This is a part-time role, and hours can scale as the work grows.

What You'll Do
  • Create original brand identities, logos, and visual systems for our clients and for Rapptr itself
  • Design custom graphics, illustration, and art direction that make products feel distinct
  • Use AI design and image tools to produce standard UI work quickly and to a high standard
  • Take app and web interfaces from concept through high-fidelity design across iOS, Android, and web
  • Partner with engineers so designs ship accurately
  • Present work in client sessions and turn feedback into stronger design
  • Build and maintain design systems and component libraries
Requirements
  • A portfolio that shows original brand and visual identity work, not just UI screens. We want to see logos, brand systems, and custom graphics that you created from scratch.
  • Strong graphic design and artistic craft across typography, color, and composition
  • Fluency with AI design and image generation tools, along with a real point of view on how to use them well
  • Solid product design ability across mobile (iOS and Android) and web
  • Proficiency in Figma
  • Strong communication skills, since you will work directly with clients
  • Availability during core US business hours
Nice to Have
  • Motion and animation design skills
  • 3D or generative art experience
  • Experience owning brand from strategy through execution
  • Familiarity with React Native or Flutter constraints
  • Previous agency or consulting experience
  • Experience with user research and testing
What We Offer
  • Competitive compensation
  • Remote role, work from anywhere in the US
  • A role where your creative range is the point, not an afterthought
  • Direct collaboration with experienced engineers and product managers
  • A flexible part-time schedule
