Job description

The Certified Telehealth Specialist works in conjunction with remote technicians and Doctors to perform activities involving (but not limited to) patient care, pre-testing, being a chairside advocate during the remote exam and maintaining the doctor's appointment schedule in a manner that delivers a professional and pleasurable patient experience. With Telehealth, this role is responsible for conducting pre-testing and specialized testing for tele-optometric exams utilizing Telehealth-related equipment and instruments.


  • The Certified Telehealth Specialist (CTS) is a patient advocate. The CTS will guide the patient through the entire Telehealth exam experience, from pre-test, being chairside during the exam and handing the patient off to an optician to purchase materials
  • The CTS will complete patient registration by gathering patient information, including Medical History and Ocular Health data
  • The CTS will conduct pretesting and explain to the patient each step of the process, which instruments conduct which tests and why they are important
  • The CTS must be comfortable engaging the patient in friendly conversation e.g., asking lifestyle questions, to uncover potential needs for eyeglasses and/or contact lenses, or any items the patient would like to make sure are covered by the Doctor
  • The CTS will assist the Remote Technician and Remote Doctor when interacting with patients.
  • The CTS will partner with the remote Doctor to help make appropriate lens recommendations using the lens and handoff tools
  • After the exam, the CTS will escort the patient to the appropriate optician or technician, explaining the recommendations for eyeglasses and/or contact lenses made for the patient
  • Instruct patients on medical care as prescribed by the doctor's treatment plan and schedules follow up appointments as needed
  • Participate in-practice meetings / projects as requested
  • Ensures that maximum OD utilization occurs thru pre-appointment confirmation, daily appointment confirmation, contacting patients from recall listings, partnership with the manager's outreach, etc. (in an office without a PCC)
  • Calls all no shows or cancelled patients to reschedule appointments (in an office without a PCC)
  • Performs end of day responsibilities to include opti-schedule wrap-up, end of day checklist, etc.
  • Makes recommendations for efficiencies, processes, etc. which will deliver either quality, cost savings, and / or profitability improvements within the store and / or across the organization
  • Performs other duties within the practice as requested and as time allows

Qualifications

  • High School or GED qualification
  • Minimum 1-year experience evaluating patients for eye exams and dispensing eye exam medications
  • Familiarity with medical terms associated with eye treatment
  • Effective & professional verbal communication skills to discuss prescriptions and treatment plans
  • Models' professionalism and a high level of personal and professional integrity through words and actions; able to put personal feelings aside when conducting business or working on tasks

Physical Demands

  • This position requires the ability to communicate and exchange information, utilize equipment necessary to perform the job, and move about the office.

  • Prior experience maintaining patients' records / files per HIPAA regulations.
  • Entry level PC skills to include MC Office, Windows, and Word Processing
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team environment, functioning for the good of the team over the individual.
