Remote Embedded Software Intern information

What is a remote embedded software intern?

A Remote Embedded Software Intern is a student or recent graduate who works remotely to assist in the development and testing of software that runs on embedded systems, such as microcontrollers or IoT devices. Their tasks often include writing code in languages like C or C++, debugging hardware-software interactions, and collaborating with engineering teams through virtual platforms. The position provides hands-on experience in embedded systems while allowing interns to work from anywhere, making it ideal for gaining industry experience without the need to relocate.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote embedded software intern?

To thrive as a Remote Embedded Software Intern, you generally need a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals, C/C++ programming, and familiarity with microcontroller architectures, often supported by ongoing or completed coursework in electrical engineering or computer engineering. Experience with development tools such as integrated development environments (IDEs), version control systems like Git, and debugging hardware or simulators is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and learning. These skills and qualities are important because they enable interns to contribute meaningfully to real-world embedded systems projects while adapting to remote teamwork and project demands.

What are some common challenges faced by remote embedded software interns, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote Embedded Software Interns often encounter challenges such as limited access to physical hardware for testing, coordinating with geographically dispersed teams, and troubleshooting issues without in-person support. To address these challenges, interns should proactively communicate with their mentors, make use of simulation tools, and participate in regular virtual meetings to stay aligned with project goals. Establishing a strong routine for documenting progress and asking for feedback can also help interns stay engaged and overcome obstacles effectively.

Job Description

Vacancy Status:

This posting is not for an existing vacancy within the organization and is open to new applications. (New Head Count)

AI Disclosure:

Work Arrangement

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Markham Elevation Centre (MEC) three times per week at minimum, or other frequency dictated by the business.

The Role:

We are looking for a new graduate Software Developer with an interest in distributed systems and fleet scale device management to help build, test, and maintain our embedded control and data plane infrastructure. This is a great opportunity to start your career working on software that runs across GM's entire vehicle fleet, with direct mentorship from senior engineers on the team.

The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in software development (C/C++) from coursework, internships, or personal projects, hands on experience from a collegiate engineering design team such as Formula SAE, SAE AutoDrive Challenge, or EcoCAR, curiosity about open source technologies, and an eagerness to learn how production grade software is designed, tested, and supported.

About the Team:The Device Data Capture Organization builds the embedded and cloud software that moves data off GM's vehicles and configuration onto them. Our data plane runs on the vehicle's ECUs collecting and uploading data, and our control plane pushes configuration out to the fleet from the cloud. Teams across GM rely on this, from Super Cruise and AV engineers training models to quality teams diagnosing field issues.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and maintain the on vehicle control plane that retrieves configuration from the cloud and applies it across the vehicle's ECUs.

  • Design, implement, and maintain the on vehicle data plane that collects, processes, and forwards data from vehicle systems to cloud storage.

  • Contribute to optimizing our control and data plane for reliable data egress and configuration delivery over intermittent connectivity, rapid convergence to new configuration, and a minimal CPU and memory footprint on the target ECU.

  • Work with cloud services such as Azure, AWS S3, and Firestore for configuration delivery, device state reporting, and data egress.

  • Collaborate with DevOps and Cloud teams to help roll out new on vehicle software and configuration safely.

  • Instrument our software with the observability needed to monitor the fleet, diagnose issues in production, and resolve them at the source.

  • Contribute to the open source community by reporting issues, contributing to documentation, and submitting patches.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Masters Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Data Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field

  • Open to those who have graduated or will be graduating between January 2026- May 2027

  • Able to work full-time, 40 hours per week

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience on a collegiate engineering design team such as Formula SAE, SAE AutoDrive Challenge, EcoCAR, Baja SAE, or similar, building and delivering a vehicle system as part of a team.

  • Experience with C, C++, or a related language through coursework, internships, or personal projects.

  • Exposure to Linux, Android, or QNX platforms through coursework, internships, or personal projects.

  • Foundational understanding of distributed systems, configuration management, or data pipelines, gained through coursework or projects.

  • Strong problem solving skills and a willingness to dig into and troubleshoot complex issues.

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Eagerness to learn how to deliver and support software in a production environment.

  • Familiarity with vehicle communication protocols (UDS, CAN, SOME/IP, XCP) or Autosar standards.

  • Understanding of network communication and security protocols, including mTLS and certificate based device identity.

  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and their device management services (IoT Hub, IoT Core, Pub/Sub, or equivalent).

  • Familiarity with OpenTelemetry.

  • Internship or project experience with fleet management, OTA, or remote configuration systems, or contributions to Fluent Bit or other data intensive open source projects.

  • Experience working with Firestore.

  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and automation tools.

Compensation:

The salary range for this role is $73,900 to $110,900. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
