Remote Embedded Engineer information

What is a remote embedded engineer?

A Remote Embedded Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains embedded systems, such as microcontrollers or specialized hardware, while working from a location outside the traditional office environment. They use programming languages like C or C++ to create software that interacts directly with hardware components. Remote Embedded Engineers often collaborate with teams using online tools, manage tasks independently, and ensure the reliability and efficiency of embedded systems across industries such as automotive, medical devices, or IoT. Their work enables connectivity and functionality in a wide range of smart devices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote embedded engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Embedded Engineer, you need expertise in embedded systems design, proficiency in programming languages like C/C++, and a background in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with microcontrollers, real-time operating systems (RTOS), hardware debugging tools, and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective remote communication skills make candidates stand out in this role. These competencies are vital to ensure reliable embedded solutions, efficient project collaboration, and independent productivity in a remote environment.

How do remote embedded engineers typically collaborate with hardware teams when working off-site?

Remote Embedded Engineers often use a combination of version control systems, video conferencing, and remote desktop tools to stay in sync with hardware teams. They may participate in daily standups, share code and test results through collaborative platforms, and sometimes use hardware simulators or remote lab access for testing. Regular documentation and clear communication are key, as are scheduled sync meetings to address integration issues and align project milestones. This structure helps ensure smooth coordination despite physical distance.

Why Bixal?
Bixal is a consulting company headquartered in Fairfax, VA, working alongside governments and organizations to help them deliver better services and experiences to the communities they serve. Using evidence-based knowledge and technology, Bixal empowers clients to deliver on their missions more effectively by fostering a culture of learning and continuous improvement.
Our values:
  • People-First: Emphasizing the importance of people in all aspects of work.
  • Collaboration and Transparency: Valuing teamwork and open communication.
  • Growth Mindset: Encouraging innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Creating Lasting Impact: Focusing on meaningful outcomes and positive change.

About the role:
In this role, you'll build and maintain the self-service developer portal and developer-facing tooling that make our client's platform golden paths easy to find and use. Embedded within the Developer Experience team, you'll work in direct proximity to the team's UX researcher and content specialist, translating research-backed interaction patterns and onboarding flows into working, instrumented software within the same sprint cadence as the research that defines what developers need.
This role offers you a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on a mission-critical federal platform that aligns with Bixal's mission of delivering innovative, human-centered solutions. At Bixal, we support your professional journey, ensuring your experience reflects our purpose-driven culture and prepares you for future success.
Location:
This is a fully remote position that can be worked anywhere in the U.S. While most of the work is expected to be conducted virtually, there is potential for occasional travel for on-site meetings and working sessions (Washington, D.C.) at the discretion of the client. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the US. Bixal does not provide visa sponsorship. U.S. citizenship is required for this position due to contractual requirement.
Compensation:
The salary range for this role is $135,000 - $138,000. In the spirit of transparency, most offers tend to land near the midpoint of the range. We make compensation decisions thoughtfully, considering your experience, the skills you bring, and our commitment to internal equity. Fairness and transparency are core to how we operate.
Responsibilities:
  • Build and maintain the self-service developer portal and developer-facing tooling for a federal agency's platform.
  • Design and automate cross-platform workflows spanning source control, CI/CD, issue tracking, observability, and collaboration tools to reduce manual developer toil.
  • Build reusable automation patterns (APIs, bots, webhooks, event-driven services, IaC, internal tooling) that standardize engineering workflows.
  • Integrate identity, access management, provisioning, and compliance controls across SaaS platforms to enable secure self-service.
  • Monitor and maintain workflow reliability, including failure detection, retry strategies, and audit logging.
  • Translate research-backed interaction patterns and onboarding flows into working, instrumented software.
  • Deliver platform improvements that measurably improve developer experience (reduced setup time, faster deployment cycles, improved release confidence).
  • Collaborate closely with the UX and documentation specialists on the team.
  • Other relevant duties as qualified and trained to perform.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree and at least 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience designing and automating cross-platform workflows spanning source control, CI/CD pipelines, issue tracking, observability, and collaboration tools.
  • Proven ability to build reusable automation patterns (APIs, bots, webhooks, event-driven services, IaC, internal tooling).
  • Experience integrating identity, access management, provisioning, and compliance controls across SaaS platforms for secure self-service.
  • Strong capability in monitoring and maintaining workflow reliability, including failure detection, retry strategies, and audit logging.
  • Able to independently deliver platform improvements that measurably improve developer experience while preventing tool sprawl and fragmentation.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a favorable Tier 4 / High Risk Public Trust determination in support of a federal government contract.

Nice to Have Skills and Experience:
  • Experience building internal developer portals or platform-as-product tooling.
  • Familiarity with GitLab, Jira, Confluence, Datadog, and Figma-integrated toolchains.
  • Experience applying human-centered design inputs directly into software delivery.
  • Exposure to AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GSA USAi, AWS Bedrock, Microsoft Copilot).

  • 401K with matching incentive
  • Parental Leave
  • Medical/dental/vision benefits
  • Flex Spending Account
  • Company provided short-term disability and life insurance
  • Commuter benefits
