Remote Electrical Power Engineer information

What is a remote electrical power engineer?

Remote Electrical Power Engineers are professionals who design, analyze, and oversee electrical power systems, such as those used for energy generation, transmission, and distribution, while working from a remote location. They use advanced software tools to create and evaluate power system models, ensure compliance with safety and industry standards, and troubleshoot technical issues. Their work often involves collaborating with on-site teams, utilities, or clients through digital communication to ensure reliable and efficient delivery of electrical power. This role is ideal for engineers who have strong technical skills and are comfortable working independently in a virtual environment.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a remote electrical power engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Electrical Power Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering principles, power systems analysis, and typically a relevant degree such as a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. Familiarity with technical tools like AutoCAD, ETAP, and SCADA systems, as well as professional engineering (PE) certification, is often required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating across locations and managing projects remotely. These skills ensure the reliable design, monitoring, and optimization of power systems while effectively working with distributed teams.

How does working remotely as an electrical power engineer affect collaboration and project communication?

As a remote Electrical Power Engineer, you will typically use digital collaboration tools like video conferencing, project management software, and shared design platforms to communicate with your team and clients. While you may not be onsite, regular virtual meetings and clear documentation are essential to ensure alignment on project requirements and timelines. Effective communication skills become even more important, as you will often coordinate with multidisciplinary teams across different locations. Adapting to remote workflows can be challenging at first, but many organizations provide robust support systems to help remote engineers stay connected and productive.

What is the difference between Remote Electrical Power Engineer vs Remote Electrical Design Engineer?

AspectRemote Electrical Power EngineerRemote Electrical Design Engineer
CertificationsPE License, IEEE certificationsPE License, IEEE certifications
Work EnvironmentPower plants, substations, energy companiesBuilding systems, infrastructure projects
Industry UsagePower generation, transmission, distributionConstruction, architecture, manufacturing
Job FocusElectrical power systems, grid stabilityElectrical system design, schematics

The main difference is that Remote Electrical Power Engineers focus on power systems, grid stability, and energy infrastructure, while Remote Electrical Design Engineers concentrate on designing electrical systems for buildings and infrastructure. Both roles require similar certifications and often work within the electrical engineering industry, but their project focus and work environments differ.

Job description

R&P is looking for a motivated mid-level Electrical Power Controls Engineer who wants to join our team. We are a small-sized defense contractor providing Engineering, Logistics, Program Management and Technical Services to government clients. We need a journeyman Electrical Power Engineer who is also a Machinery Controls Engineer. The Electrical Power Controls Engineer will support the design, integration, testing, troubleshooting, and sustainment of electrical control systems and power distribution architectures for U.S. Navy ship programs. This role is focused on PLC/HMI programming, automation, control logic development, system integration, and technical support for mission-critical electrical power systems. This position will support shipboard electric plant and integrated power system control activities for BBG (X) class ships, including PLC/HMI development, control logic troubleshooting, interface testing, system integration, and technical documentation for Navy laboratories, shipyards, land-based test sites, and shipboard environments. Engineering services will be provided in and around the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Philadelphia. A hybrid/remote work schedule can be acceptable during certain design phases.

  • Design, develop, implement, and troubleshoot electrical control systems for Navy and defense applications.
  • Develop, program, modify, and optimize PLC logic and HMI interfaces for legacy and new systems.
  • Support integration of shipboard power generation, distribution, conversion, and auxiliary equipment control systems.
  • Troubleshoot PLC logic, I/O signals, sensors, relays, motor controllers, networked control devices, and electrical interfaces.
  • Support testing and troubleshooting in laboratory, shipyard, land-based test site, and shipboard environments.
  • Create, update, and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, control logic documentation, and technical manuals.
  • Develop and execute test plans, test procedures, troubleshooting procedures, and technical reports supporting control system verification and validation.
  • Review system requirements, interface documentation, drawings, and technical specifications to support system integration.
  • Coordinate with Government customers, engineering leads, vendors, and cross-functional technical teams.
  • Support root-cause analysis, corrective actions, configuration reviews, and engineering recommendations.
  • Manage technical documentation and engineering deliverables using Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, and other project tracking tools.

Mandatory Qualifications:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Secret DoD Security Clearance or the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. secret DoD security clearance.
  • Education: B.S. Degree or higher in Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience: Minimum 5+ years of experience in electrical engineering, control systems, automation, power systems, or related technical work.
  • Experience with Ladder Logic-based PLCs, including Allen-Bradley, Modicon, Siemens, or similar platforms.
  • Experience developing or modifying HMI interfaces.
  • Knowledge of electrical controls, automation systems, power generation, power distribution, and system integration.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, test procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Experience troubleshooting electrical, controls, and power equipment issues.
  • Strong documentation, communication, and project coordination skills.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Exceptional oral, written, and presentation skills.
  • Regular physical activity may include walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, reaching, lifting up to 30 pounds, standing, and occasionally prolonged sitting.
  • Ability to travel up to 25%.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting Navy, DoD, shipboard, or industrial power systems.
  • Familiarity with requirements tracking, test documentation, configuration management, and engineering change processes.
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols, networked controllers, remote I/O, control system interfaces, and tools such as Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Modicon/Schneider, Wonderware/AVEVA, AutoCAD Electrical, MATLAB/Simulink, or LabVIEW.
  • Experience supporting laboratory, shipyard, industrial, or shipboard testing environments.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity/RMF considerations for control systems.
  • Experience interfacing directly with Government customers or technical authorities.
