Electrical Estimator

Location: Indianapolis, IN (Onsite) / Portland, OR (Remote) / Phoenix, AZ (Remote)

Salary: $100,000-$135,000/year

Job Description:

The Electrical Estimator is responsible for developing accurate cost estimates for electrical construction scopes and supporting senior staff with budgeting, bid evaluation, and cost analysis. The role leverages design documents, field data, industry standards, RSMeans data, and current market pricing to produce reliable estimates and support fair and competitive pricing decisions.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Estimating: Review drawings, specifications, and project documentation to prepare detailed electrical cost estimates.

  • Quantity Takeoffs: Perform accurate material and labor takeoffs using design documents and industry-standard tools and methods, including RSMeans-based references where applicable.

  • Cost Standards: Apply knowledge of union labor rates, electrical trade practices, and NECA standards to ensure estimates reflect current industry conditions.

  • Bid Analysis: Evaluate and support bid reviews by comparing subcontractor and trade submissions against project scope, budget, and market pricing conditions.

  • Should-Cost Modeling: Develop independent “should-cost” estimates to validate pricing submissions and support fair, market-aligned cost assessments.

  • Pricing Research: Source and validate up-to-date pricing data from vendors, subcontractors, suppliers, and cost databases.

  • Bid Evaluations: Support structured bid evaluation processes, including identifying scope gaps, pricing inconsistencies, and risk factors.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with architects, engineers, and project teams to clarify scope, resolve discrepancies, and strengthen estimating accuracy.

  • Reporting: Prepare cost comparisons, reconciliations, and variance analyses across multiple estimates and explain key cost drivers.

  • Documentation Management: Maintain accurate and organized estimating records, project files, and cost data in compliance with company standards.

  • Cost Data Support: Contribute to the maintenance and improvement of internal cost libraries and benchmarking data.

  • Process Improvement: Assist senior staff in identifying workflow efficiencies and enhancing estimating practices and tools.

  • Field Support: Conduct site walks or field visits when required to verify site conditions and support estimate development.

  • Adaptability: Operate effectively in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities and deadlines.

  • Travel: Quarterly travel may be required to Indianapolis, IN for candidates based in Oregon or Arizona, depending on project needs and business requirements.

  • Additional Duties: Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Supervisor or project leadership.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or related field, or equivalent relevant industry experience.

  • Experience: 5–10 years of experience in electrical estimating, construction estimating, or related project cost roles.

  • Estimating Tools: Well-versed in electrical take-offs and RSMeans-based estimating methodologies.

  • Industry Standards: Associated with NECA standards and practices, with demonstrated application in electrical construction estimating.

  • Software Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, Windows OS, and web-based estimating or project management platforms.

  • Analytical Skills: Strong ability to analyze drawings, costs, and bid data to support accurate and defensible estimates.

  • Communication Skills: Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present cost information clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Organization: Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple estimates and deadlines simultaneously.

  • Collaboration: Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary project teams, contractors, and consultants.
