  • Prepare and review:
    • One-line and three-line diagrams
    • Substation layout and configuration.
    • AC & DC schematics and wiring diagrams
    • Equipment specifications (breakers, transformers, CTs, PTs, relays, etc.)
    • Grounding system design and calculations
    • Protection and control philosophies
  • Perform engineering calculations including:
    • Short-circuit and coordination studies
    • Equipment sizing and ratings
    • Ground grid analysis (step/touch potential)

Technical Oversight & Collaboration

  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers and designers
  • Review drawings and calculations for technical accuracy and constructability
  • Interface with clients, utilities, EPC partners, and equipment vendors
  • Support project scopes including greenfield substations, expansions, and retrofits

Standards, Compliance & Quality

  • Ensure designs comply with applicable standards and codes (IEEE, NEC, NESC, utility standards)
  • Support internal quality control and design reviews
  • Assist with constructability reviews and field issue resolution as needed
  • Assist with development of in-house HV substation design process and standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (required)
  • 10+ years of experience in high-voltage substation engineering and design
  • Demonstrated experience with:
    • Transmission and distribution substations
    • Protection and control systems
    • Utility or EPC project environments
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • IEEE, ANSI, NESC standards
    • Utility design practices and specifications
  • Ability to work independently and deliver high-quality engineering outputs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license (active or previously held)
  • Experience as a consultant or contractor in the power industry
  • Familiarity with:
    • Substation design tools (AutoCAD, MicroStation, ETAP, SKM, ASPEN, CYME, etc.)
  • Experience supporting construction, commissioning, or field troubleshooting

Engagement Details

  • Flexible schedule; hours based on project workload
  • Long-term engagement potential for the right candidate
  • Competitive hourly or project-based compensation
  • Minimal travel; occasional site visits may be required
