How much do remote drainage engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 4, 2026, the average yearly pay for remote drainage engineer in the United States is $96,894.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $84,500.00 and $110,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Drainage Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Drainage Engineer, you need a solid background in civil engineering principles, hydrology, and drainage system design, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and professional certification (such as PE or equivalent). Proficiency with CAD software, GIS tools, and hydraulic modeling systems is essential for planning and analyzing drainage infrastructures remotely. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and self-motivation are vital soft skills for collaborating with teams and clients in a virtual environment. These skills ensure accurate, efficient drainage solutions and seamless project delivery, even when working off-site.

What are some common challenges faced by remote drainage engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote drainage engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with on-site teams, accessing up-to-date site data, and managing project timelines across different locations. These can be effectively addressed by leveraging digital collaboration tools, maintaining regular virtual meetings, and utilizing GIS and remote sensing technologies for accurate site assessments. Building strong communication channels with project managers, contractors, and local authorities is also crucial for ensuring successful project delivery and resolving issues promptly.

What are Remote Drainage Engineers?

Remote Drainage Engineers are professionals who design, analyze, and manage drainage systems for various projects, such as roads, buildings, and land developments, while working remotely. They use digital tools and software to assess water flow, prevent flooding, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations. These engineers collaborate with teams and clients virtually, reviewing site plans, preparing reports, and providing technical guidance from a remote location.

What is the difference between Remote Drainage Engineer vs Remote Civil Engineer?

AspectRemote Drainage EngineerRemote Civil Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, drainage certificationsEngineering degree, civil engineering licenses
Work EnvironmentDesigning drainage systems, site assessmentsBroader infrastructure projects, site planning
Industry UsageWater management, stormwater systemsTransportation, construction, infrastructure
Search & ComparisonOften compared for infrastructure roles involving drainageMore general, includes drainage but broader scope

The main difference between a Remote Drainage Engineer and a Remote Civil Engineer lies in their focus areas. Drainage engineers specialize in designing and managing drainage and stormwater systems, often requiring specific certifications. Civil engineers have a broader scope, working on various infrastructure projects, including drainage, but also encompassing roads, bridges, and buildings. Both roles are essential in infrastructure development, but drainage engineers focus more narrowly on water management systems.

Job description

Job Title: Civil Design Engineer
Department: Engineering
Reports To: Director of Engineering
Location: Remoteย
Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt

Position Summary

The Civil Design Engineer will support the development, design, and execution of large-scale solar PV projects within an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) environment. This role focuses on the civil and site engineering aspects of utility-scale solar projectsโ€”from conceptual design and permitting through detailed construction documents and as-built closeout. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of grading, drainage, stormwater management, and site layout, with the ability to integrate engineering principles into efficient, constructible, and cost-effective solar designs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and review civil site designs including grading, drainage, access roads, foundations, and stormwater systems for utility-scale solar projects.

  • Prepare and/or review design deliverables such as site plans, grading plans, erosion control plans, and construction details.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (electrical, structural, geotechnical, and construction) to ensure coordinated project designs.

  • Support permitting efforts by preparing civil design documentation and responding to jurisdictional comments.

  • Perform site analysis using topographic data, geotechnical reports, and hydrology studies to guide design decisions.

  • Utilize civil engineering and CAD software (e.g., Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Hydraflow, HEC-RAS, or similar) to produce detailed and accurate drawings.

  • Evaluate constructability and provide field support during construction, including review of RFIs, submittals, and redlines.

  • Assist in developing civil design standards, templates, and best practices for continuous improvement.

  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including stormwater management, environmental, and permitting requirements.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline required.

  • 3โ€“5ย years of experience in civil/site design, preferably in renewable energy, infrastructure, or land development projects.

  • Experience working in an EPC or design-build environment preferred.
    ย

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and other civil design tools.

  • Strong understanding of hydrology, grading, and drainage design principles.

  • Familiarity with solar plant layout and interconnection concepts a plus.

  • Knowledge of permitting processes and environmental compliance requirements.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication.

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across teams.

  • Attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality work.
