Reporting directly within the Optum Financial product organization, the Director of Optum Wallet Product Lead is a critical enterprise product leadership role responsible for establishing the product strategy, member experience, roadmap, and adoption model for Optum Wallet across Optum and UHG experiences. This role owns the Wallet product vision and the digital experiences that help members understand, access, and use healthcare payment capabilities more easily.
This position requires a seasoned consumer product leader who can operate across healthcare, financial technology, payments, benefits, merchant experiences, and enterprise platform teams. The role serves as the primary product voice for Wallet, balancing member value, business outcomes, delivery feasibility, compliance, cost, and enterprise reuse.
As the product leader over the Wallet experience, this role drives the multi-year product roadmap, defines the funding source and merchant experience strategy, and ensures Wallet decisions are connected to clear business and member outcomes. Close partnership with product, engineering, architecture, design, operations, legal, compliance, finance, analytics, business stakeholders, and external partners is essential to deliver measurable outcomes.
As a Director, you will lead high-visibility initiatives that materially shape Optum Wallet adoption, member payment experiences, funding source strategy, and enterprise payment modernization.
  • Consumer Wallet Strategy: Define what Optum Wallet should become over the next several years, including the member experience, funding source roadmap, merchant value proposition, and adoption strategy
  • Executive Impact & Visibility: Frame decisions, tradeoffs, investment needs, scope boundaries, and success measures for senior product, business, and technology leaders
  • Wallet Experience Stewardship: Own the end-to-end member journey from discovery through payment, confirmation, transaction visibility, saved payment methods, future engagement, and expansion of Wallet capabilities
  • Funding Source Strategy: Shape how cards, HSA/FSA, rewards, stored value, and future payment methods are introduced, sequenced, and positioned within the Wallet experience
  • Enterprise Alignment: Translate complex healthcare and payment concepts into product direction that product, engineering, design, operations, compliance, and business partners can act on
  • Enterprise Impact Statement: Deliver meaningful value by simplifying healthcare financial experiences, improving member confidence, increasing payment engagement, and creating reusable Wallet capabilities across the enterprise

You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Wallet Strategy & Vision: Define and own the multi-year Wallet product vision, roadmap, objectives, success metrics, and executive decision framework
  • Member Experience Ownership: Own the end-to-end Wallet member experience across discovery, funding source selection, payment, confirmation, saved payment methods, transaction visibility, and future engagement
  • Funding Source & Merchant Strategy: Define how cards, HSA/FSA, rewards, stored value, and future payment methods should work within Wallet and how merchants integrate with and benefit from the experience
  • Product Discovery & Business Cases: Lead product discovery, adoption strategy, business case input, scope decisions, and prioritization across member value, feasibility, risk, compliance, cost, and enterprise reuse
  • Executive Decision Framing: Create clear narratives that help leaders understand what decisions are needed, what is in scope, what is intentionally out of scope, and where tradeoffs exist
  • Roadmap Leadership: Sequence Wallet capabilities into clear releases that provide near-term value while building toward the long-term product vision
  • Cross-Functional Alignment: Partner closely with engineering, architecture, UX/UI, operations, legal, compliance, finance, analytics, business stakeholders, and external partners to drive execution
  • Capability Direction: Set product intent clearly enough for PM-POs, design, and engineering to translate strategy into executable capabilities, requirements, and delivery-ready work
  • Outcome Management: Define and track success measures tied to member adoption, usage, payment completion, funding source utilization, merchant value, operational readiness, and enterprise reuse

You'll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.
Required Qualifications:
  • 10+ years of product management experience with meaningful ownership of consumer-facing digital products
  • 5+ years of experience owning product vision, roadmap, prioritization, success metrics, product launches, and executive stakeholder alignment
  • 3+ years of experience leading cross-functional teams through discovery, prioritization, delivery, and post-launch iteration
  • Experience in digital wallet, consumer fintech, healthcare payments, payments, banking, rewards, embedded finance, marketplace, or commerce environments
  • Experience with funding sources such as cards, HSA/FSA, stored value, rewards, or bank-based payments

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience evaluating build, buy, and partner decisions in a complex enterprise environment
  • Experience with companies or talent profiles similar to PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, Stripe, Square/Block, Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, Chime, SoFi, Robinhood, Shopify, Uber, DoorDash, Airbnb, CVS, Transcarent, Included Health, or Teladoc
  • Proven ability to translate customer needs, market trends, business goals, and operational realities into a clear product strategy
  • Proven advanced communication skills with the ability to frame decisions for executive, business, design, engineering, operations, compliance, and partner audiences
