Remote Developers and Remote Software Engineers share similar skills and credentials, often working remotely in tech environments. The main difference lies in their roles: Remote Developers typically focus on coding and building applications, while Remote Software Engineers may have broader responsibilities including system design and architecture. Both roles are in high demand and frequently searched for by employers and job seekers alike.

What does a remote developer do?

Remote developers, or remote software developers, design and create computer software programs and applications for their employer or client. Unlike in-house developers, remote developers work from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote developer, you discuss the kind of program you need to create, making sure to clarify with your department or with your client what they need in their application. You may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one. Remote developers are responsible for a program’s overall function, and they design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program. Remote developers may also design tests and protocols for the QA department to follow when they are testing the application.

What is a remote developer?

Remote developers are software professionals who work from locations outside of a traditional office environment, often from home or co-working spaces. They use digital tools to collaborate with team members and clients, writing code, fixing bugs, and participating in project meetings online. Remote developers enjoy flexibility in their work location and hours, but they also need strong communication skills and self-motivation. This role is popular in the tech industry, enabling companies to access talent from around the world.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Developer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and experience with software development methodologies, often supported by a relevant degree or coding certifications. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, remote collaboration tools (e.g., Slack, Jira), and cloud-based development environments is typically required. Excellent self-motivation, time management, and clear written communication set standout remote developers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality code, collaborating effectively across distributed teams, and maintaining productivity independently.

What are some common challenges faced by remote developers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote developers often encounter challenges such as communication barriers, feelings of isolation, and managing work-life balance due to the lack of physical boundaries between home and work. To overcome these, it's important to establish clear communication channels with your team, set regular check-ins, and use collaboration tools effectively. Additionally, creating a dedicated workspace and setting defined work hours can help maintain productivity and personal well-being. Many companies also support remote developers through virtual team-building activities and flexible schedules.

Job description

At RV Education (EDU), we believe in the power of online learning to create opportunities and transform lives. In partnership with over 300 colleges and universities, we help individuals make smart educational decisions that meet their needs and career aspirations. Our trusted brands like BestColleges serve over 90 million unique annual visitors with educational resources and advice.

At Red Ventures, we believe in building transformative digital experiences that help people make life's most important decisions. As a Senior Software Engineer in our EDU division, you'll be a key contributor to the full product development lifecycle - designing, building, and maintaining user-facing features, backend services, and the tooling that connects them.

You'll work across the stack, with an emphasis on delivering intuitive, performant user experiences that are grounded in clean, maintainable architecture. This role is ideal for a builder who thrives on shipping impactful features, pairing with product and design, and continually leveling up their technical skills.

RV EDU is proudly headquartered in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and is dedicated to cultivating local talent and driving economic development on the island. While many of our roles are located in Puerto Rico, some are also located at RV's main campus south of Charlotte, NC, or are remote-based.

As a requirement for this role, the selected candidate must be based in Puerto Rico. We are seeking individuals who are currently residing on the island or are willing to relocate to Puerto Rico. This location-based requirement is essential to foster our commitment to local talent and contribute to the economic growth of Puerto Rico. This role requires a hybrid schedule and will be based out of our San Juan, Puerto Rico office with in-office Monday-Thursday and fully remote work on Fridays.

What You'll Do

  • Build and deliver full-stack features that drive real impact for students, using React, Next.js, TypeScript, Node.js, and AWS services.
  • Collaborate closely with design and product teams to develop user interfaces that are fast, accessible, and delightful.
  • Build backend APIs and data flows to support rich UI functionality and performance.
  • Own systems from design to deployment, including observability, testing, and performance.
  • Improve our front-end architecture, design system, and shared component libraries to support scale and velocity.
  • Work within a modern DevOps environment, contributing to infrastructure using tools like AWS CDK or Terraform where appropriate - without it being your main focus.
  • Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and mentoring opportunities to help raise the bar across the team.
  • Continuously learn, iterate, and bring new ideas to improve the developer and user experience.

What We're Looking For:

  • 4-6 years of professional software engineering experience in modern web development.
  • Solid experience building full-stack applications, ideally using:
  • Frontend: React, Next.js, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS
  • Backend: Node.js, REST/GraphQL APIs
  • Cloud: AWS (Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, RDS, API Gateway)
  • Strong understanding of front-end architecture, state management, and performance optimization.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure concepts (e.g., IaC, CI/CD) and comfort working in cloud environments - you don't need to lead these efforts, but you shouldn't be blocked by them.
  • A strong product mindset and ability to collaborate cross-functionally.
  • Clear communication skills and a team-oriented approach.
  • Attention to detail, from pixels to performance.

Nice To Have:

  • Experience contributing to or managing a design system
  • Familiarity with content management tools or headless CMS
  • Background in education, publishing, or other high-scale consumer web domains
  • Exposure to event-driven systems or loosely coupled architectures

Additionally, the following benefits are provided by Red Ventures, subject to eligibility requirements.

  • Matching 401(k) plan
  • Flexible PTO
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Casual dress code, yes, that means jeans!
