Job description

Overview

The Design Engineerย on theย Horizonย teamย plays a critical role in shaping the look, feel, and usability of the AI platform,ย from zeroย to one. This role turns product ideas, complex workflows, and user needs into polished interfaces that feel intuitive, trustworthy, and delightful across desktop and mobile experiences.ย

Working across product design, frontend engineering, and AI-native workflows,ย thisย individual partners closely with Engineering, Product, Data, Security, Operations, and domain Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to make sophisticated platform capabilities simple and useful for real users.ย

This role contributes to the development and evolution of core product experiences, spanning interaction design, visual systems, information architecture, design systems, responsive interfaces, prototyping, production frontend implementation, accessibility, performance, and usability within a regulated, high-stakes environment. Successย requiresย exceptional product taste, strong frontend craft, pragmatic systems thinking, and a bias toward shipping.ย

The Design Engineer is expected toย operateย in an AI-native product environment, using modern design tools, coding agents, rapid prototyping workflows, and frontend frameworks to move quickly from concept to production. In parallel, this individual will help create the foundation for AI-enabled product capabilities by ensuring the user experience is clear, coherent, fast, accessible, and easy for teams to extend.ย

This is a fully remote position that offers a competitive salary range of $140,000 to $180,000 USD, plus an annual bonus. You'll also receive our excellent benefits package, which includes medical coverage starting on day one and a company-matched 401(k). Compensation may vary based on experience, location, and other job-related factors.

Responsibilities

Product Experience & Visual Craftย

  • Define and evolve the product experience, visual language, interaction patterns, and overall feel of the platform across key user journeysย
  • Translate ambiguous product goals, user needs, and AI workflow concepts into clear flows, prototypes, and polished interface designsย
  • Raise the barย atย the macro level,ย but alsoย with great attention to detailย atย the micro level. Re-imagineย usability, hierarchy, typography, spacing, motion,ย micro interactions,ย state transitions, etc. for AI-native platformsย

Frontend Engineering & Prototypingย

  • Build production-quality frontend experiences using modern technologies such as React, TypeScript, Next.js, CSS, or comparable frameworksย
  • Move fluidly from prototype to shipped product, balancing speed, maintainability, accessibility, responsiveness, and technical qualityย
  • Own frontend changes from design exploration and implementation through production rollout, feedback, and iterationย

AI-Native Workflows & Platform UXย

  • Design and build interfaces that make complex AI capabilities, model outputs, human review flows, and operational workflows easy to useย
  • Partner with Engineering, Data, and domain teams to connect interfaces to real services, data, model outputs, permissions, and platform capabilitiesย
  • Identifyย where AI can improve user productivity while preserving clarity, trust, control, and auditability in the experienceย

Design Systems, Quality & Accessibilityย

  • Create andย maintainย reusable components, design-system primitives, interaction patterns, and frontend conventions that help the product scale consistentlyย
  • Improve interface quality through thoughtfulย componentย architecture, responsive behavior, browser performance, accessibility, and cross-device polishย
  • Contribute to documentation, examples, usage guidance, and review practices that help engineers and designers apply patterns consistentlyย
  • Identifyย and address UX debt, visual inconsistencies, and frontend quality risks before they become entrenched in the productย

Collaboration, Research & Iterationย

  • Partner closely with Product, Engineering, Security, Operations, and SMEs to understand workflows, constraints, and user pain pointsย
  • Use customer feedback, usability findings, analytics, and stakeholder input to improve product clarity and usefulness over timeย
  • Balance userย delightย with operational, compliance, security, and engineering constraintsย appropriate forย a regulated fintech environmentย

Culture & Craftย

  • Contribute to a culture of ownership, curiosity, taste, pragmatism, and high product craftย
  • Raise the bar through thoughtful design critique, clear communication, strong frontend execution, and sound product judgmentย

Qualifications
  • 4-7+ years of experience designing and building high-quality software products, ideally in a fast-moving product engineering environmentย
  • Strong portfolio or body of shipped workย demonstratingย product taste, interaction design judgment, visual craft, and frontend implementation qualityย
  • Hands-on experience with Figma or similar design tools and a strong command of UX flows, hierarchy, typography, spacing, and visual polishย
  • Strong frontend engineering experience with React, TypeScript, modern CSS, responsive layouts,ย componentย architecture, browser fundamentals, and production frontend practicesย
  • Experience turningย rough ideasย into working prototypes and then hardening successful prototypes into maintainable product experiencesย
  • Ability toย design forย desktop and mobile experiences, including responsive behavior, accessibility, performance, and cross-browser qualityย
  • Comfort working with AI-enabled, data-heavy, integration-heavy, or operationally critical product experiences where clarity and trust matterย
  • Working knowledge of design systems, reusable components, interaction patterns, and frontend quality practicesย
  • Comfort using AI-native tools, coding agents, and rapid prototyping workflows to accelerate exploration and implementationย
  • Good judgment in ambiguous environments where the path is not fully defined and the team needs to go from zero to oneย
  • Clear communication skills with both technical and non-technical teammatesย

Preferred Experienceย

  • Experience building design systems, internal platforms, developer tools, workflow products, or complex B2B software for fast-moving product teamsย
  • Experience in fintech, mortgage, lending, payments, insurance, or other regulated domainsย
  • Experience designing and building AI product experiences, including copilots, agentic workflows, human-in-the-loop review, trust surfaces, or model-output interfacesย
  • Experience improving user activation, usability, frontend performance, accessibility, design consistency, or design-to-code velocity as systems grow
    ย
