Familiarity with secure coding practices, embedded systems, and tools such as Git, Jira, and specialized defense software development environments is crucial. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-motivation are standout soft skills for remote collaboration and meeting strict project requirements. Collaboration is facilitated through secure, government-approved communication platforms and version control systems that comply with strict security protocols. Regular virtual meetings and documentation are essential to ensure alignment on project requirements and updates. While remote work offers flexibility, engineers must be diligent in following procedures for handling sensitive information and may sometimes need to access secure facilities for classified work. Effective communication and adaptability are key to overcoming the challenges of working in a highly regulated, remote environment.

What is a Remote Defense Contractor Software Engineer?

A Remote Defense Contractor Software Engineer is a software developer who works for a company contracted by government defense agencies to build, maintain, or secure software systems, but does their work from a remote location instead of a traditional office or on-site facility. Due to the sensitive nature of their work, they may require special security clearances and must adhere to strict security protocols even while working remotely.

Job description

We're looking for a Software Engineer - Contractor to join our AI/Automation team and contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of Azure-hosted web portals, platforms, and intelligent automation solutions. You'll work across several active products - including internal portals, an external client-facing portal, CRM systems, and Argus, our large-scale EDI processing platform currently in testing.

This role is hands-on. You'll be writing code, building features, integrating AI capabilities, and shipping to production - but you'll also need to think architecturally about how components fit together in Azure. We value engineers who can own a feature end-to-end: understand the requirement, design the approach, build it, and deploy it. You'll be expected to leverage AI-assisted development tools and incorporate AI/automation into your daily workflow.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build and maintain full-stack Azure-hosted portals (internal member portal, external client portal, Argus portal) across UI, API, and data layers
  • Contribute to the Argus EDI platform, handling healthcare transactions including eligibility, claims, remittance, and acknowledgments
  • Develop and extend CRM functionality supporting TPA operations and client management
  • Work with Azure services (App Services, Azure SQL, Functions, Storage, AI Services) and participate in architectural decisions
  • Integrate AI/automation capabilities into products and workflows; use tools like GitHub Copilot and Azure AI as part of your daily development process
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across multiple TPA entities to understand requirements and deliver solutions

Qualifications

  • 3-7+ years of professional software development experience
  • Proficiency in the .NET ecosystem - C#, ASP.NET Core/MVC, Web API, Entity Framework or similar ORM
  • Solid SQL Server skills - queries, stored procedures, relational data modeling
  • Hands-on Azure experience - App Services, Azure SQL, Functions, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Comfort using AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Azure AI, etc.) and a willingness to integrate AI/automation into the products you build
  • Web fundamentals - HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript
  • Sound architectural thinking - service boundaries, data flow, scalability trade-offs
  • Git-based version control (GitHub, Azure DevOps, or similar)
  • Self-directed remote work ethic with proactive communication
  • Frontend framework experience - React, Angular, or Blazor preferred
  • Azure AI Services - OpenAI, Cognitive Services, AI Search, Document Intelligence preferred
  • Advanced Azure architecture - Entra ID, Bicep/ARM/Terraform preferred
  • CRM platform development or customization preferred
  • Healthcare/TPA industry experience, EDI/X12 familiarity (834, 835, 837, 999, etc.), or claims processing knowledge preferred
