What is a remote data science civil engineering?

A remote data science civil engineering job combines the principles of civil engineering with data science techniques, allowing professionals to analyze, model, and interpret complex engineering data from a remote location. These roles typically involve tasks such as data analysis, predictive modeling, simulation, and optimization to improve infrastructure design, construction, and maintenance. Professionals in this field use programming languages, statistical methods, and engineering software to solve real-world civil engineering problems, all while working outside of a traditional office environment.

How does a remote data science role in civil engineering typically interact with on-site engineering teams to ensure project alignment?

In a remote data science position within civil engineering, frequent collaboration with on-site engineering teams is essential to ensure data-driven insights align with practical project requirements. This is commonly achieved through regular video meetings, shared project management tools, and clear documentation of data methodologies and results. Remote data scientists often participate in cross-functional team discussions to translate complex analyses into actionable recommendations, bridging the gap between data insights and field implementation. Effective communication and proactive engagement are key to overcoming challenges posed by physical distance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote data science civil engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Data Science Civil Engineer, you need a solid background in civil engineering principles, data analysis, and proficiency with programming languages like Python or R, often supported by an engineering degree and relevant certifications. Familiarity with software such as AutoCAD, GIS tools, data visualization platforms, and cloud-based collaboration systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and self-motivation skills help you collaborate effectively across virtual teams and translate data insights into practical engineering solutions. These capabilities are essential for leveraging data to drive innovation and efficiency in civil engineering projects while working remotely.

What is the difference between Remote Data Science Civil Engineering vs Remote Structural Engineering?

Job description

Leidos National Security Sector has a current opening for a TS/SCI cleared Data Scientist supporting our 10-year DOMEX Technology Platform (DTP) contract working alongside software/system engineers and research/data scientists with expertise in multi-modal information retrieval, UI development, computer vision, metrics, information science, artificial intelligence, and autonomous systems.

Are you ready to join Leidos all-star team? Through training, teamwork, and exposure to challenging technical work, let Leidos show how to accelerate your career path.

Are you a TS/SCI cleared Data Scientist that likes to perform research-level data science/analytics?

Come support a major program advancing the state of the art in mission-focused big data and predictive analytics. You will be delivering cutting edge data science capabilities to advance national security objectives, swiftly produce and analyze results, disseminate findings, and contribute to publications and presentations with actionable intelligence insights. While most work is conducted on-site at our client location in Bethesda, MD, we offer a flexible schedule and many tasks may be performed remotely. The percentage of remote work will vary based on client requirements/deliverables

Fun stuff you will do:

  • Work closely with a tight-knit team of data scientists, software developers, network engineers, senior investigators, program managers, researchers, and data analysts to design, build, and optimize a Search and Discovery platform to find and organize results, disseminate findings via reports, and contribute to publications and presentations.
  • Work on research tasks to recommend optimal approaches to index and organize data for discovery. Create agents and tools as reusable elements in a broader agentic solution space.
  • Support multiple simultaneous projects and take open-ended or high-level guidance, independently and collaboratively make discoveries that are mission-relevant, and package and deliver the findings to a non-technical audience.
  • Bring your mix of intellectual curiosity, quantitative acumen, and customer-focus to identify novel sources of data across a range of fields, to improve the performance of predictive algorithms, and to encourage user adoption of high-end data analytics platforms in partnership with a highly qualified, highly motivated team.
  • Leverage your strong background in research design, exploratory analysis, quantitative methods, user interface application design, and experience with customer outreach and engagement

To be successful in this role you need the following (required):

  • B.S. Degree in a quantitative or analytical field such as Computer Science, Mathematics, Economics, Statistics, Engineering, Physics, or Computational Social Science; or Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree including certificate-based advanced training courses
  • 4+ years of experience in data science, analytics, or quantitative intelligence analysis, and demonstrating progressive technical development and outcomes. 2+ years of experience required with a Master's
  • Must have an active TS/SCI clearance and must be able to obtain and maintain a Polygraph
  • Proficiency in Python
  • Deployment of data science applications (e.g. Streamlit) using Docker, Kubernetes, and/or OpenShift.
  • Experience with information retrieval and search, e.g. Elastic Stack (Elasticsearch and Kibana) and/or Structured Query Language (SQL)
  • Familiarity with Git along with its application to adherence with good practices in cooperative software development teams.
  • Experience working with a hybrid team of analysts, engineers, and developers to conduct research, and build and deploy complex, but easy-to-use algorithms and analytical platforms
  • Track record of active learning and creative problem solving
  • Work with a team in co-development and cooperative research making best efforts to leverage and reuse team products.

You will wow us even more if you have some of these skills:

  • A significant share of your data analytics experience in direct support of military or intelligence community customers, demonstrating progressive technical development and mission-focused outcomes.
  • Experience constructing and performing evaluations of analytics including test data construction, test execution and metrics.
  • Experience with an Agentic software solution (e.g. Agno, CrewAI, Pydantic AI, LangGraph).
  • Experience with an on-prem, air gapped environment and/or Amazon Web Services (AWS/C2S)
