What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Data Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Data Engineer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, Java, or Scala), experience with data modeling, ETL processes, and a solid understanding of database systems, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with big data tools like Apache Spark, Hadoop, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), and certifications in these technologies is highly valued. Excellent problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and project delivery. These competencies ensure effective data pipeline development, reliable data management, and seamless teamwork across distributed environments.

Remote data engineers use tools to collect, process, and store large sets of data, making it accessible for analysis and business decision-making. They collaborate with teams virtually, often using cloud-based technologies, to ensure that data infrastructure is reliable, scalable, and secure. This role requires strong technical skills in programming, databases, and data architecture, as well as the ability to communicate effectively in a distributed work environment.

Job description

Why This Role?
We're partnering with a growing organization to add a DataAnalystto our client's fast-moving, highly collaborative team. This is a unique opportunity to step into a role where you'll build and shape data infrastructure from the ground up, directly influencing how sales and marketing decisions are made.
If you're someone who thrives in ambiguity, enjoys solving complex data challenges, and wants real ownership, this is not your typical reporting role.
What You'll Do
In this role, you'll act as a mix of data analyst, architect, and problem solver, helping transform messy, underutilized data into actionable insights.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Clean, structure, and manage large, complex datasets
  • Ingest and consolidate data from multiple, disparate systems
  • Build dashboards and deliver insights to business stakeholders
  • Analyze trends and translate data into actionable strategies
  • Identify gaps in data quality and implement improvement solutions
  • Independently research and implement new tools, processes, and solutions
  • Explore and analyze advanced data sources, including video analytics (as applicable)
Tools & Technology
  • Open to experience with:
    • Power BI
    • Domo
    • Tableau
    • Looker / Looker Studio
  • Bonus experience:
    • APIs or data integration
    • Programming (Python or similar)
What We're Looking For
  • Strong hands-on experience with data ingestion and analytics
  • Ability to work across multiple systems and data formats
  • Proven critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Comfort working in ambiguous, evolving environments
  • Experience building solutions-not just running reports
Preferred:
  • 2+ years of post-college experience or
  • Senior-level contractor with deep expertise
This isn't a plug-and-play data role. It's ideal for someone who can dig in, figure things out, and build solutions independently. If you're looking for impact, ownership, and the chance to create something meaningful, this could be your next move!
Please note, this role is fully onsite with our client in West Michigan. We will not consider remote candidates.
