What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Data Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Data Engineer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, Java, or Scala), experience with data modeling, ETL processes, and a solid understanding of database systems, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with big data tools like Apache Spark, Hadoop, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), and certifications in these technologies is highly valued. Excellent problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and project delivery. These competencies ensure effective data pipeline development, reliable data management, and seamless teamwork across distributed environments.

How do remote data engineers typically collaborate with other team members across different time zones?

Remote data engineers often work with distributed teams, which requires strong communication and organization skills. They collaborate using tools like Slack, Zoom, and project management platforms to stay aligned on data pipeline development, troubleshooting, and deployment. Regular stand-ups, asynchronous documentation, and clear communication of progress are essential for ensuring everyone is on the same page, regardless of location. Flexibility in working hours and proactive scheduling of meetings help facilitate effective collaboration and project delivery.

What is remote data engineering?

Remote data engineering involves designing, building, and maintaining data systems and pipelines while working from a location outside of a traditional office. Remote data engineers use tools to collect, process, and store large sets of data, making it accessible for analysis and business decision-making. They collaborate with teams virtually, often using cloud-based technologies, to ensure that data infrastructure is reliable, scalable, and secure. This role requires strong technical skills in programming, databases, and data architecture, as well as the ability to communicate effectively in a distributed work environment.

How can I make $2000 a week working from home?

Remote data engineers can earn $2000 or more per week by working on high-demand projects, leveraging specialized skills in data pipelines, cloud platforms, and programming languages like Python or SQL. Achieving this income often requires advanced expertise, certifications, and experience with tools such as AWS or Azure, as well as the ability to handle multiple clients or projects simultaneously.

Shape how data becomes insight across our business.
Hastings Insurance is seeking a Data Engineering Manager to join our Information Technology team. This role leads the design, development, and operational oversight of enterprise data pipelines, warehousing platforms, and systems-of-record integrations. Serving as a hands-on technical manager, this position ensures reliable ingestion, transformation, modeling, and storage of data that supports downstream reporting and business decision-making while aligning with governance standards and enterprise architecture priorities.
As advanced analytics and data science functions are led within our Actuarial & Risk Management group, this role will focus on engineering, warehousing, and enterprise data infrastructure.
Location & Schedule:
This is a full-time position working Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The role offers flexibility and may be performed onsite in Hastings, in a hybrid format, or fully remote. For remote arrangements, we strongly prefer candidates who reside in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, or Wisconsin, though additional states may be considered based on business needs.
What You'll Do:
  • Lead and develop data engineering and warehousing teams, including staffing, performance management, coaching, and professional growth.
  • Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of enterprise data pipelines and warehousing environments aligned to architecture standards.
  • Ensure reliable integration of data from core systems of record into centralized data platforms.
  • Guide data modeling, transformation, and storage practices that support secure, scalable enterprise data solutions.
  • Collaborate with IT engineering, architecture, and business stakeholders to support downstream analytics and reporting needs.
  • Ensure adherence to data governance standards through collaboration with data owners and process leaders.
  • Develop and manage maintenance schedules for data platforms and warehousing systems.
  • Evaluate emerging data technologies and recommend solutions that enhance reliability, scalability, and cost effectiveness.
  • Support vendor evaluations, contract negotiations, and management of third-party data service providers.
  • Stay informed on trends impacting Property and Casualty insurers and enterprise data environments.
Additional Role Highlights:
  • Enterprise technical leadership role with direct responsibility for data engineering and warehousing operations.
  • Working manager position with hands-on influence over data pipelines and platform reliability.
  • Strong partnership across IT and business teams to ensure trusted enterprise data.
  • Opportunity to strengthen and evolve core data infrastructure supporting the organization.
What You'll Bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Business, Economics, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience supporting data analysis initiatives, business data flows, or data engineering environments, including experience leading or mentoring technical teams.
  • Strong understanding of Property and Casualty insurance operations and information needs preferred.
  • Demonstrated expertise in ETL design, development, and implementation.
  • Working knowledge of project phases and general project management concepts.
  • Experience across multiple computing environments including mainframe, client-server, and internet-based platforms.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and operate effectively in complex, time-sensitive environments.
