What does a remote data engineer do?

As a remote data engineer, you focus on collecting, storing, and organizing large amounts of information. You work from home to design, develop, and maintain systems for the mining, warehousing, and processing of data. A data engineer communicates with employers, clients, or other data professionals to assess the needs of the project and develop and implement solutions to meet those needs. Data engineers also take steps to manage current database architecture and make updates when needed. Remote engineers typically handle their responsibilities in a cloud-based environment using “big data” tools, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and SQL.

While both roles work with data, their responsibilities and skill sets differ, making each suited for different career paths within data teams.

How do remote data engineers typically collaborate with other team members across different time zones?

Remote Data Engineers often work with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, analysts, and software engineers, many of whom may be located in different parts of the world. Collaboration is usually facilitated through project management tools, version control platforms, and regular virtual meetings. It’s common to have a mix of synchronous check-ins and asynchronous communication, allowing for flexible scheduling and efficient handoffs. Strong written communication skills and proactive status updates are essential for staying aligned with team objectives and project deadlines.

What is a remote data engineer?

A Remote Data Engineer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains data pipelines, databases, and data processing systems while working from a location outside of a traditional office. They collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to ensure data is collected, stored, and made accessible efficiently and securely. Remote Data Engineers use programming languages like Python or Scala, work with technologies such as SQL, Hadoop, or cloud platforms, and address challenges related to data quality and scalability. Their remote role allows them to work for companies regardless of geographic location, often relying on virtual collaboration tools to stay connected with their teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Data Engineer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Python or Scala, expertise in SQL, data modeling, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or GCP), big data tools (like Hadoop and Spark), and certifications in cloud or data engineering are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills help remote data engineers collaborate effectively and stay productive in a distributed environment. These competencies ensure reliable data pipelines, scalable solutions, and seamless teamwork, which are critical for organizational success in data-driven projects.

Job Description:

Our client, a leading food manufacturer based in Massachusetts, is seeking a Data Platform Tech Lead to own the technical direction of their modern data platform. This individual will lead a team of three (Senior Data Engineer, Analytics Engineer, and Reporting Analyst) while remaining hands-on, taking technical stories each sprint, and driving the end-to-end data lifecycle — from ingestion through modeling to reporting. The ideal candidate has deep experience with Snowflake, Matillion, and dbt, along with ERP integration experience, ideally with Sage X3, and a background in manufacturing, supply chain, or similar operational environments.

Job Summary:

  • Lead and mentor a team of three (Senior Data Engineer, Analytics Engineer, Reporting Analyst) while remaining hands-on each sprint
  • Own the full data lifecycle: extract data from APIs, files, SaaS applications, and on-prem systems; build and manage ETL/ELT pipelines; ingest, cleanse, transform, and model data; deliver reporting and dashboards
  • Integrate data from the company's ERP (Sage X3) and numerous business-owned applications, bringing together sales, finance, inventory, manufacturing, supply-chain, and operational data
  • Manage and enhance the modern data stack: Snowflake, Matillion, dbt, Power BI, and Python
  • Design scalable architecture and reusable data models aligned with business needs
  • Support the potential evolution/migration of portions of the environment to Microsoft Fabric
  • Work closely with nontechnical business stakeholders to translate business needs into technical solutions
  • Conduct code reviews, establish best practices, troubleshoot pipeline issues, and improve documentation/testing
  • Partner with the OT/manufacturing technology team
  • Turn manual processes into scalable, automated data solutions

Minimum Requirements:

  • 5-7 years of experience in data engineering, data platforms, analytics engineering, or data integration
  • Proven end-to-end data experience — not someone who has only done reporting or only maintained pipelines
  • Advanced SQL and strong cloud data warehouse experience (Snowflake or highly comparable)
  • Hands-on experience with ETL/ELT tools and building scalable pipelines
  • dbt experience strongly preferred
  • Experience building data models across complex business domains (Finance, Operations, Supply Chain)
  • ERP integration experience; Sage X3 experience ideal
  • Manufacturing, supply-chain, inventory, or distribution industry experience
  • Experience leading or mentoring technical team members while remaining hands-on
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work with nontechnical stakeholders
  • Stable tenure or credible explanations for career transitions
  • Ability to work remotely while attending the Massachusetts office approximately once per month

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct Matillion experience
  • Power BI or Tableau experience
  • Python experience
  • Microsoft Fabric experience
  • Experience migrating from on-prem SQL Server environments to a cloud data warehouse
  • Experience partnering with OT or plant/manufacturing technology teams
  • Formal management experience (one-on-ones, performance reviews, employee development)
  • Agile development, automated testing, CI/CD, and version-control experience
