What Does a Remote Data Engineer Do?

As a remote data engineer, you focus on collecting, storing, and organizing large amounts of information. You work from home to design, develop, and maintain systems for the mining, warehousing, and processing of data. A data engineer communicates with employers, clients, or other data professionals to assess the needs of the project and develop and implement solutions to meet those needs. Data engineers also take steps to manage current database architecture and make updates when needed. Remote engineers typically handle their responsibilities in a cloud-based environment using “big data” tools, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and SQL.

Remote Data Analysts interpret data, create reports, and provide insights using visualization tools. While both roles work with data, their responsibilities and skill sets differ, making each suited for different career paths within data teams.

How do remote Data Engineers typically collaborate with other team members across different time zones?

Remote Data Engineers often work with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, analysts, and software engineers, many of whom may be located in different parts of the world. Collaboration is usually facilitated through project management tools, version control platforms, and regular virtual meetings. It’s common to have a mix of synchronous check-ins and asynchronous communication, allowing for flexible scheduling and efficient handoffs. Strong written communication skills and proactive status updates are essential for staying aligned with team objectives and project deadlines.

What is a Remote Data Engineer?

A Remote Data Engineer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains data pipelines, databases, and data processing systems while working from a location outside of a traditional office. They collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to ensure data is collected, stored, and made accessible efficiently and securely. Remote Data Engineers use programming languages like Python or Scala, work with technologies such as SQL, Hadoop, or cloud platforms, and address challenges related to data quality and scalability. Their remote role allows them to work for companies regardless of geographic location, often relying on virtual collaboration tools to stay connected with their teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Data Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Data Engineer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Python or Scala, expertise in SQL, data modeling, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or GCP), big data tools (like Hadoop and Spark), and certifications in cloud or data engineering are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills help remote data engineers collaborate effectively and stay productive in a distributed environment. These competencies ensure reliable data pipelines, scalable solutions, and seamless teamwork, which are critical for organizational success in data-driven projects.

Job description

With a company culture rooted in collaboration, expertise and innovation, we aim to promote progress and inspire our clients, employees, investors and communities to achieve their greatest potential. Our work is the catalyst that helps others achieve their goals. In short, We Enable Possibility℠.
Job Description Summary
Strategic Analytics is a dynamic and growing team at Arch that drives innovation and transforms how the business operates. We build AI/ML-first products that change how Arch underwrites, services, and learn from its book - combining frontier LLMs, multi-agent orchestrations and traditional ML. Our mission is broad: agentic automation, decision support, AI/ML-driven insights, and the engineering required to make all of it production-grade.
We have a strong track record of success. We aim to continue scaling these efforts and are seeking a VP Implementation Engineering to own the engineering vision, strategy, and production backbone for agentic and ML systems across Strategic Analytics.
This role leads the implementation engineering (IE) function and owns the engineering practices, tooling, architectures and delivery pipelines that turn AI/ML models into reliable, scalable products - partnering closely with data scientists, data engineers, automation engineers, data visualization engineers, and platform teams.
This role may sit remotely; being located near an Arch office is preferred but not required.
Key Responsibilities
  • Translates AI strategy into scalable engineering execution-ensuring AI systems are safe, observable, cost-effective, compliant, and aligned with product and business outcomes.
  • Architect and govern AI/ML system designs including multi-agent flows, complex orchestrations, RAG, classical ML services and hybrid architectures.
  • Productionize AI/ML solutions into stable, low-latency, compliant, scalable applications.
  • Build, lead, and develop a multi-team AI/ML engineering organization-including managers and senior engineers-setting technical standards and a culture of rigorous, maintainable delivery.
  • Drive organization-wide alignment by influencing senior executives, peer engineering leaders, and product leaders; resolve prioritization conflicts and clarify accountability boundaries.
  • AI/ML Lifecycle Ownership: Spearhead the AI/ML Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) balancing rapid experimentation with scalable, production-grade engineering standards.
  • Establish robust practices for versioning, deployment, CI/CD pipelines, logging, and automated rollback strategies.
  • Build and operate observability, monitoring, and alerting systems to track model drift, latency, throughput, and cloud computing cost governance.

Required Skills / Experience
  • 10+ years of software engineering and/or automation engineering experience.
  • 8+ years of people leadership experience, including leading other managers and leaders
  • Demonstrated experience building production grade AI and/or ML systems
  • Resilient problem solving - comfortable with ambiguous problems.
  • Exceptional communication and influence; able to operate across teams.

Desired Skills / Experience
  • P&C insurance domain familiarity - underwriting, claims, or submission lifecycle.
  • Experience with complex orchestrations and microservice designs.
  • Cloud experience in Azure (preferred for our stack) and/or AWS; familiarity with private endpoints and enterprise-grade safeguards.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams (onshore + offshore) for technology delivery.

Education
  • College degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Analytics, or equivalent practical experience.
