These skills ensure data centers are efficiently designed, compliant, and resilient, supporting critical business operations.

How does a Remote Data Center Design professional typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

A Remote Data Center Design professional regularly works with cross-functional teams including network engineers, architects, project managers, and HVAC specialists. Collaboration often happens through virtual meetings, cloud-based design platforms, and shared documentation to ensure all infrastructure requirements are met efficiently. Clear communication is crucial, as you’ll coordinate on timelines, technical standards, and troubleshooting, often across different time zones. Building strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders ensures that design solutions align with operational needs and industry regulations.

What is remote data center design?

Remote data center design involves planning, engineering, and managing data center infrastructure from a location separate from the physical site. Professionals in this field use digital tools and communication technologies to create layouts, specify equipment, and ensure systems meet performance, security, and efficiency standards. This approach enables collaboration across global teams and supports efficient project delivery, especially for organizations with multiple or geographically distant data centers.

With major offices in Herndon, Denver, and Amsterdam, we have a global footprint and a unified team of employees committed to providing a premier customer experience and delivering the full spectrum of data center solutions, from core to edge, like no other data center provider can do.
Focused on driving innovation and helping our customers define and deliver their own unique vision for the Edge, at any scale, in any market worldwide, for any requirement, we are building tomorrow's data center infrastructure, today for some of the world's most demanding Network, Content, and Cloud customers.
EdgeConneX is seeking a hands-on visionary Principal Data Center Electrical Engineer to define the electrical architecture for our next-generation global data center standard. In this high-impact role, you will research and evaluate current and emerging technologies, translate innovation into pragmatic, future-proof designs, and set clear, scalable standards that balance build complexity, cost, and schedule. You'll author and maintain design guidelines, templates, and best practices that our internal project engineering teams and external EPC partners will use worldwide. The ideal candidate brings deep technical rigor and international experience, yet embraces that there are multiple valid paths to a great solution-able to articulate trade-offs, align stakeholders, and drive consensus across diverse customer requirements. If you're excited to shape industry-leading architectures, contribute to community initiatives advancing data center technology, and deliver adaptable solutions at global scale, we'd love to meet you. This Individual Contributor position can be based in either one of our offices in Virginia and Colorado or be based remotely in the U.S. or countries in EMEA where we already have infrastructure. It will require 25% travel globally as it will support all of our Design Engineering teams globally. For now, this position will report to our Head of Global Data Center Design Engineering based in the U.S.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Define Electrical Architecture: Develop and standardize electrical designs for EdgeConneX data centers, ensuring scalability, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Research & Innovation: Stay ahead of industry trends and community initiatives, evaluating new technologies and systems to incorporate best practices.
  • Standards Development: Create, maintain, and update design standards, guidelines, and templates to provide clear direction for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with internal project engineering teams and external EPC partners to ensure alignment and successful implementation.
  • Solution-Oriented Approach: Deliver flexible solutions that meet diverse customer requirements while maintaining consistency with EdgeConneX standards.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Communicate ideas effectively, establish actionable plans, drive consensus, and secure buy-in across teams.

Qualifications:
  • Education: Master's degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 10 years in large-scale (minimum 20MW) data center electrical design.
    • At least 5 years of experience on international projects.
  • Technical Expertise: Deep understanding of electrical systems, power distribution, redundancy strategies, and emerging data center technologies.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Strong communication and leadership skills.
    • Ability to navigate complex challenges and propose multiple viable solutions.
    • Proven track record of driving consensus among diverse stakeholders.

Additional Required Attributes:
  • Familiarity with global standards and compliance requirements.
  • Experience collaborating with EPC firms and managing large-scale deployments.
  • Passion for innovation and continuous improvement in data center design.
