Position Highlights:

  • The Data Abstraction Specialist is responsible for supporting the Cancer Registry rapid abstraction team.
  • The candidate will research, gather and code all first course treatment information as it occurs for all Moffitt cancer patients registered in the Cancer Registry Database (CNExT) and will assist in completing registry abstracts in compliance with requirements and standards of the Florida Cancer Data System (FCDS), the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACoS/CoC), the North America Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR), the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program and internal Cancer Registry program goals.
  • The candidate will monitor, code and document the patient's treatment concordance in the Rapid Cancer Reporting System (RCRS) and liaise with the Cancer Registry team to alert them of cases at risk of non-compliance with the measures.
  • Technical qualifications including knowledge of the disease process, diagnostic methods and procedures, composition of the health record, data interpretation, and statistical and analytical skills.
  • Skilled in the use of the following standardized coding instructions and rules: Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) Solid Tumor Multiple Primary and Histology rule set, Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Neoplasm Coding Manual and Database, Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) RX - Interactive Drug Database, Commission on Cancer's Standards for Oncology Registry Entry (STORE) Manual, and the Florida Cancer Data System (FCDS) Data Acquisition Manual.

Responsibilities:

  • Obtains first course treatment information for all Cancer Registry patients by contacting physician offices and other hospitals by letter, fax or phone call.
  • Gathers the first course treatment information in the required format and codes all of the information in compliance with state and national guidelines while maintaining department benchmarks.
  • Liaises with the Certified Tumor Registrars to help ensure case completeness and accuracy.
  • Monitors and codes the patient's treatment information in the Rapid Cancer Reporting System (RCRS).
  • Provides support to the Abstracting team by preparing the abstract in advance of coding and staging and coding all first course treatment information.
  • Validates and reconciles patient data from various reports for the Cancer Registry.
  • Reviews the deceased patient notification email account and updates the Cancer Registry.
  • Performs quality assurance for patients eligible for a survivorship care plan by validating patient's vital status.
  • Performs monthly peer quality review of cases for preparation and first course treatment coding to maintain high accuracy rates and identify opportunities for improvement.

Experience and Education:

  • Requires High School Diploma/GED; Associate's degree preferred; prefer coursework or equivalent experience in medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology, oncology and information technology.
  • Must have 2 years of experience in data entry and data management navigating electronic health records required, experience with Microsoft suite/Microsoft 365; experience using database programs needed.
  • Ability to interpret components of the medical record needed, including pathology, radiology, history and physical, operative and/or discharge reports and ambulatory care notes, phone notes, chemotherapy orders/flowsheet and MOSAIQ for radiation information. Must be familiar with confidentiality requirements and be able to maintain privacy of patient data. Good oral and written communication skills needed. Must be comfortable talking to cancer patients, physicians and health care professionals. Needs to be a self-starter and able to work with little supervision.

Salary Range

$21.12 - $32.24
