What is remote cyber security?

Remote cyber security refers to the practice of protecting computer systems, networks, and data from cyber threats while working from a location outside of a traditional office setting. Professionals in this field help organizations secure their digital assets by monitoring for threats, implementing security protocols, and responding to incidents, all from a remote location. This role often requires knowledge of network security, risk management, and relevant technologies, as well as the ability to use secure communication tools. As remote work becomes more common, remote cyber security specialists play a critical role in safeguarding company information and maintaining compliance with security standards.

What are remote jobs in cyber security?

Cybersecurity professionals protect an organization’s communications systems and networks from a data breach or other types of cyber threats. Job titles range from cybersecurity analyst, cybersecurity engineer, or cybersecurity specialist up to Chief Information Security Officer. As a cybersecurity expert, your responsibilities involve monitoring systems and implementing security measures to protect against threats. You may also be asked to provide training and guidance to enhance employee awareness of safe practices they should follow when accessing company data and systems. Should cyber hackers get into your company’s network, you must asses the damage, fix problems that arise, and mitigate further risk.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote cyber security professional?

To thrive as a Remote Cyber Security professional, you need a solid understanding of network security, threat analysis, and risk management, often backed by a relevant degree and industry certifications like CISSP or CompTIA Security+. Familiarity with security tools such as firewalls, SIEM systems, endpoint protection, and VPNs is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for identifying threats and collaborating remotely with teams. These skills are vital for protecting sensitive data, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining a secure digital environment from any location.

How do remote cyber security professionals typically collaborate with on-site teams and stakeholders?

Remote cyber security professionals often leverage secure communication tools and project management platforms to stay connected with on-site teams. Regular virtual meetings, incident response drills, and real-time messaging ensure that remote staff remain aligned with organizational security protocols and incident handling. Building strong communication habits and documenting all processes helps bridge the physical gap and fosters effective collaboration, especially during high-pressure events like threat detection or remediation. Additionally, remote roles require proactive participation in knowledge-sharing sessions and continuous updates on evolving security threats.

Job description

Hiring a remote Cyber Security Consultant!
Job Description
This role focuses on applying deep cybersecurity expertise to review, develop, and refine AI-generated security content and tools. You will evaluate AI-produced security findings, attack scenarios, and risk assessments for technical accuracy and practical relevance, while creating hands-on security exercises and technical documentation that help train and benchmark advanced AI models. The position blends offensive and defensive security concepts, vulnerability analysis, incident response, and secure coding in a fully remote, flexible, and project-driven environment.
Responsibilities
  • Review AI-produced cybersecurity materials, including security findings, attack scenarios, and risk evaluations, to ensure they are technically accurate, realistic, and practically useful.
  • Develop and complete hands-on security exercises, labs, and analytical challenges that support the training, validation, and benchmarking of AI models in cybersecurity contexts.
  • Create concise, high-quality technical documentation, security-focused content, and code samples that illustrate best practices, sound methodologies, and secure coding techniques.
  • Assess, compare, and provide structured feedback on model-generated responses to improve overall AI performance, accuracy, and output quality.
  • Interact with AI systems through testing and validation activities, following reviewer guidance to refine results, adjust workflows, and iterate on model behavior.
  • Apply cyber defense, cyber risk, and incident response knowledge to design and evaluate realistic security scenarios and solutions.
  • Use coding and scripting skills, particularly in Python, to build, modify, and troubleshoot code samples, exercises, and evaluation artifacts.
  • Follow established project guidelines, documentation standards, coding guidelines, and submission requirements while maintaining meticulous attention to detail.
  • Manage workload and priorities in a fast-paced, project-driven environment, consistently meeting productivity expectations and quality standards.
  • Work autonomously in a remote setting, effectively organizing tasks and delivering high-quality work with minimal supervision.
  • Leverage cloud-based collaboration tools and code repositories to share work, participate in reviews, and contribute to iterative improvements.
  • Incorporate feedback from multiple review cycles, refining content, code, and documentation to maintain accuracy, clarity, and consistency throughout the project.

Essential Skills
  • At least 5+ years of professional, hands-on experience in information security, cyber defense, offensive security, digital forensics, threat research, security operations, or closely related disciplines.
  • Recent individual contributor experience performing technical security work rather than serving exclusively in leadership or people-management roles.
  • Strong cybersecurity experience covering offensive and defensive security concepts, vulnerability analysis, incident response, and secure coding practices.
  • Working coding ability in Python, including writing, troubleshooting, and modifying code for security-related use cases.
  • Proficiency with software development and scripting, including the ability to modify existing applications and work within established code repositories.
  • Comfort with completing technical coding evaluations as part of the role.
  • Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical topics into clear, audience-appropriate explanations and documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to interpret documented processes, apply feedback effectively, and maintain high quality through multiple rounds of review.
  • Solid technical aptitude, including familiarity with cloud-based collaboration tools, desktop software installation and configuration, browser management, file sharing, and common document conversion tasks.
  • Ability to dedicate approximately 30 to 40 hours per week over the course of a multi-month (approximately 12-week) project engagement.
  • Residence and work authorization within the United States.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience gained within government, defense, or military environments in information security, cyber defense, offensive security, digital forensics, threat research, or security operations.
  • Hands-on experience with cyber defense and cyber risk assessment, including designing or evaluating realistic attack and defense scenarios.
  • Familiarity with artificial intelligence, large language models (LLMs), and their application to cybersecurity problems.
  • Experience providing remote support and collaborating effectively in distributed teams.
  • Knowledge of scripting for security automation, tooling, and coding purposes beyond Python.
  • Understanding and application of coding guidelines and secure development practices in security-focused projects.
  • Industry-recognized security credentials such as OSCP, GCFA, GREM, CRTO, CEH, or similar; while beneficial, demonstrated technical proficiency and practical experience are prioritized over formal certifications.
  • Ability to work effectively in a self-directed environment, managing priorities and delivering results with minimal supervision.

Work Environment
This role is 100% remote, offering the flexibility to work from your preferred location within the United States. The position is structured as a multi-month engagement of approximately 12 weeks, with an expected commitment of 30 to 40 hours per week and potential for extension. Working hours are flexible and self-directed, allowing you to organize your schedule around project deadlines and productivity expectations rather than fixed shifts. The environment is fast-paced and project-driven, with a strong emphasis on hands-on technical work in cybersecurity and secure coding, without production support, on-call duties, or shift work. You will use cloud-based collaboration tools, code repositories, and standard desktop software to perform your work, participate in reviews, and share deliverables in a fully virtual setting.
Job Type & Location
