Job Description Summary:

This position will take a central role in developing strategy and execution for the technical and tactical preparation, training and competitive instruction of cross country and mid-distance/distance student-athletes, alongside the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country. Additionally, it will collaborate in program and recruiting strategy to build and maintain a high-performing NCAA Division I men's and women's Cross Country and Track & Field program, with a particular focus on Cross Country and mid-distance/distance areas. It will also assist with the entirety of the program and other event areas as defined by the Director.
Job Description:
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Professional level of experience or specialized expertise.
  • Skills or competencies related to the sport through previous playing and/or coaching experience.
  • Demonstrates independent judgement and discretion in the instruction and coaching of student-athletes in individual skill instruction and small group sessions.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities gained through prior playing and/or coaching experience.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead small and large group discussions.
  • Strong computer skills and the ability to utilize the latest advances in technology.
  • Experience defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts, and drawing valid conclusions, and have the demonstrated ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions.
  • NCAA compliance certification.
  • Valid Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree.
  • Sport specific coaching certification.
  • Collegiate playing and/or coaching experience in track & field throwing events.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Must meet physical requirements for the job, including the ability to participate in and lead strenuous physical activities.
  • Must work nights and weekends.
  • Frequent overnight travel during week and on weekends on a monthly basis throughout the year.
  • Prolonged period of sitting and standing indoors. and frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • Yearly completion of NCAA compliance certification.
  • Current CPR certification or completed within 6 months of employment.
  • Completion of University van safety training.
  • Maintain a valid driver's license.
  • This is a restricted position subject to availability of funding.
  • This position is restricted to a specific term.

Job Duties:
65% - Coaching:
  • Take a primary role in programming, implementing and executing preparation, training, and competition strategies for men's and women's Cross Country and mid-distance/distance student-athletes, in collaboration with Director of Track & Field/Cross Country.
  • Assist in the organization of competition schedule for Cross Country, Indoor Track & Field, and Outdoor Track & Field, in collaboration with Director of Track & Field/Cross Country.
  • Work with assigned strength and conditioning coach to design and implement weight room schedule and strength programs to best fit the developmental needs of student-athletes in event group.
  • Collaborate with Sports Medicine and Sports Performance staff to ensure student-athlete welfare for healthy participation in sport.
  • Facilitate student-athlete academic success through resources offered by academic support.
  • Support student-athletes in entire men's and women's program as directed by Director of Track & Field/Cross Country.

25% - Recruiting:
  • Assist in the identification and engagement of high school and transfer prospective student-athletes for recruitment to William & Mary.
  • Follow recruiting strategy as outlined and defined by Director of Track & Field and Cross Country, which may include shifting priorities at Director's discretion.
  • Collect necessary information regarding athletic and academic qualifications to ensure recruits meet admissions and athletic standards for the needs of the program.
  • Abide by all regulations so as to never cause W&M to be penalized for a breach of NCAA rules.
  • Complete all necessary administrative tasks and documentation for both on and off-campus recruiting contacts.

10% - Administrative/Collaboration:
  • Prepare the necessary administrative paperwork necessary for travel, budget, recruiting, and meet management as required by Director of Track & Field/Cross Country.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with all division and athletic department entities and those across campus in other University capacities.
  • Effectively and appropriately use software/technology tools -TeamWorks, Workday, EMS, Outlook, Box, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, phone, text messaging etc. - to increase and expedite team/event group management, communication and collaboration.

Additional Job Description:
Salary: up to $50,000 commensurate with experience and internal alignment.
