What is remote counseling?

Remote counseling, also known as online or virtual counseling, is a form of mental health support where sessions are conducted through digital platforms such as video calls, phone calls, or secure messaging. This allows clients to access professional counseling services from the comfort of their own home or any location with internet access. Remote counseling offers flexibility, convenience, and wider accessibility, especially for those who may have mobility issues, live in remote areas, or have busy schedules. Sessions are typically confidential and use secure technology to protect clients’ privacy. Many licensed therapists and counselors now offer remote services to meet the growing demand for accessible mental health care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote counselor?

To thrive as a Remote Counselor, you need a background in psychology or counseling, appropriate licensure, and experience in mental health assessment and intervention. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, secure video conferencing tools, and electronic recordkeeping systems is essential. Strong empathy, active listening, and clear communication are critical soft skills for building trust and providing effective support remotely. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring client well-being, maintaining confidentiality, and delivering impactful counseling services in a virtual environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote counselors, and how can they be addressed?

Remote counselors often encounter challenges such as establishing rapport with clients through digital platforms, managing technological issues, and ensuring client confidentiality. Building trust can require more effort without face-to-face cues, so counselors should utilize active listening and clear communication. To address technical problems, having backup communication methods and being familiar with troubleshooting basic issues is important. Maintaining a private, secure workspace and using encrypted platforms helps protect client privacy and confidentiality, which is essential in a remote setting.

A well-established national civil litigation firm is seeking an experienced Senior Counsel to remotely support its Sacramento practice. This opportunity is ideal for an accomplished California litigator who wants sophisticated casework, meaningful autonomy, strong mentorship and leadership opportunities, and a clear path for continued career advancement.

The firm offers the resources and stability of a national platform while maintaining a collaborative, team-oriented environment. Senior attorneys are trusted to take ownership of their matters, work directly with clients, mentor developing attorneys, and play an active role in the continued growth of their practice.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

Remote Flexibility
Attorneys have significant flexibility in where they work. Candidates should be based in California and able to travel to Sacramento as needed for court appearances, client matters, trials, and other case-related responsibilities.

Leadership + Autonomy
Take ownership of complex litigation matters while working with experienced partners and a strong support team. Senior attorneys are encouraged to lead, mentor, and have a voice in case strategy.

Defined Career Growth
For attorneys interested in taking the next step in their careers, the firm offers structured professional development, leadership opportunities, and a defined pathway toward partnership.

Strong Infrastructure
The firm has invested heavily in technology, training, administrative support, and modern billing tools designed to make attorneys more efficient and allow them to focus on practicing law.

Performance Is Rewarded
In addition to competitive base compensation, attorneys have access to a clearly defined billable-hour bonus structure that rewards high performers.

About You

You are an experienced California litigator who can independently manage cases while still enjoying being part of a collaborative team.

You are comfortable developing case strategy, taking and defending depositions, handling court appearances, working directly with clients, and preparing matters for mediation and trial.

Experience with insurance defense, general liability, premises liability, construction-related litigation, professional liability, catastrophic injury, or other civil defense matters is highly desirable.

Responsibilities
  • Independently manage civil litigation matters from inception through resolution.
  • Develop case strategy and evaluate exposure.
  • Handle court appearances, hearings, depositions, mediations, and trial preparation.
  • Draft and argue motions and other substantive pleadings.
  • Manage written discovery and depositions.
  • Maintain regular communication with clients regarding strategy, exposure, and case developments.
  • Collaborate with partners, associates, paralegals, and support staff.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to less experienced attorneys.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships.

Qualifications
  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Active California Bar license required.
  • Approximately 8+ years of civil litigation experience preferred for Senior Counsel consideration.
  • Insurance defense experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong deposition, discovery, motion practice, and trial preparation experience.
  • Ability to independently manage a litigation caseload.
  • Excellent legal writing and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Comfortable working independently in a remote environment while remaining highly collaborative with the broader team.

Compensation & Benefits

Base Salary: $160,000–$210,000 base, depending on experience and qualifications.

Additional compensation and benefits include:

  • Annual billable-hour bonus program beginning at $10,000 with additional bonus tiers for higher production.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and life insurance options.
  • 401(k) with employer matching.
  • Student loan repayment or education savings assistance for eligible attorneys.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Monthly technology reimbursement.
  • Flexible vacation policy.
  • Firm-paid CLE programs and bar license renewal fees.
  • In-house training and leadership development.
  • Defined pathway to partnership.
  • Employee wellness resources.
  • Professional networking and firm-sponsored social events.

If you're an experienced California defense litigator looking for remote flexibility, sophisticated work, strong earning potential, and a genuine opportunity for advancement, we'd love to connect.
