Job description

About Us

Enkel is a cloud-based accounting and financial operations firm serving 300+ Canadian businesses and not-for-profits. Our mission is simple: deliver accurate, timely, and decision-ready financials so our clients can build stronger organizations.

We believe great financial reporting should do more than check compliance boxes. It should help leaders make better decisions, grow their organizations, and create meaningful impact.

Our team moves fast, embraces technology, and constantly pushes the bar higher for financial clarity and client service. If you care deeply about using financial data to drive real-world decisions, you will fit right in.

About The Role

This is not a traditional Controller role.

We are seeking aController, Strategic Accounts to act as the embedded, in-house financial leader for a select group of 5 to 10 larger, more complex clients.

In this role, you will operate as your clients' de facto Controller, owning their finance function end-to-end and partnering directly with founders, executive teams, and non-profit leaders on how they run and grow their organizations.

This is a depth over breadth role. Rather than managing a high-volume portfolio, you will work closely with a small number of organizations where context, continuity, and judgment matter. You will be expected to go beyond reporting by bringing insight, challenging assumptions, and helping leaders make better financial decisions.

Alongside your client work, you will support and elevate our internal team, ensuring that execution matches the level of strategic insight you bring.

This role is designed for Controllers who want to move beyond oversight and operate as a true financial partner, with meaningful influence on how organizations plan, operate, and grow.

Key Responsibilities & Goals

Embedded Financial Leadership

  • Act as the in-house Controller for a portfolio of 5 to 10 complex clients
  • Own the full finance function, from reporting to planning and decision support
  • Lead monthly and quarterly financial discussions with executive teams
  • Translate financial data into clear insights that drive decisions
  • Support cash flow management, budgeting, and forward-looking financial planning
  • Partner with leadership on key decisions, including growth, hiring, and resource allocation
  • Guide clients through year-end processes, audits, and complex transactions
  • Identify risks early and proactively recommend corrective action

Special Projects & Strategic Initiatives

  • Lead high-impact financial projects across your client portfolio, such as:
    • Financial model development and rebuilds
    • System implementations and process transformations
    • Board and investor reporting enhancements
    • Scaling finance functions for growing organizations
    • Supporting fundraising, audits, or major organizational changes
  • Bring structure and clarity to ambiguous or complex financial situations
  • Step into critical moments where strong financial leadership is required

Operational & Quality Oversight

  • Review and approve financial statements to ensure accuracy, integrity, and compliance
  • Oversee full-cycle accounting and complex journal entries
  • Maintain 95%+ file quality standards across your portfolio
  • Ensure 100% on-time sales tax filings including GST, HST, PST, and PSB
  • Conduct internal quality reviews and identify opportunities to improve processes and outputs

Team Leadership & Enablement

  • Lead and mentor a team of bookkeepers and senior accountants supporting your clients
  • Provide coaching, technical guidance, and structured feedback
  • Act as a senior escalation point for complex accounting issues
  • Drive accountability and continuously raise the bar on delivery quality
  • Support the development and growth of team members

Client Partnership & Trust

  • Build deep, trusted relationships with founders, executive teams, and non-profit leaders
  • Participate in leadership and board-level financial discussions
  • Act as the primary financial point of contact for your clients
  • Respond to client communication within one business day
  • Resolve issues quickly, thoughtfully, and with strong judgment
  • Identify opportunities where Enkel can provide additional strategic value

What You Bring

  • 10 to 12+ years of experience in accounting or financial leadership roles
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian GAAP and tax regulations
  • Experience with Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations is a must
  • Experience working with non-profit organizations is a strong plus
  • CPA designation is an asset
  • Deep experience with QuickBooks Online, Xero, Dext, and modern cloud accounting tools
  • Proven ability to operate autonomously and exercise strong financial judgment
  • Experience working directly with founders, executives, or boards
  • Strong ability to translate financial data into business insight
  • Proven leadership experience managing and coaching accounting professionals
  • Ability to manage a small number of high-impact engagements with high standards

Why Join Enkel?

When you join Enkel, you can expect:

  • Competitive compensation aligned with experience and location
  • Employer-paid benefits for you and your family
  • Generous paid time off, including vacation and flex days
  • A collaborative, high-performance, and values-driven culture
  • The opportunity to operate as a true financial partner to organizations doing meaningful work

Salary: $90,000 to $120,000

Location: Vancouver, BC (Hybrid)
