What is the difference between Remote Control Systems Engineer vs Automation Engineer?

AspectRemote Control Systems EngineerAutomation Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications in control systemsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications in automation or control systems
Work EnvironmentIndustrial plants, manufacturing facilities, remote monitoringFactories, production lines, industrial settings
Industry UsagePower, manufacturing, aerospaceManufacturing, process industries, robotics
Job FocusDesign and maintain remote control systems for machineryDesign and implement automation solutions for processes

While both roles involve control systems, Remote Control Systems Engineers focus on designing and maintaining remote control solutions for machinery, often in industrial or remote environments. Automation Engineers develop comprehensive automation systems to improve manufacturing processes. The roles overlap in control system knowledge but differ in scope and application.

How do remote control systems engineers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in a remote work environment?

Remote Control Systems Engineers often work closely with software developers, hardware engineers, and project managers, especially when designing and troubleshooting complex control systems. In a remote setting, collaboration is facilitated through virtual meetings, cloud-based design tools, and regular status updates. Clear documentation and proactive communication are essential to ensure alignment across teams, and many organizations use agile methodologies to coordinate tasks and track progress. This collaborative approach not only helps resolve technical challenges efficiently but also fosters continuous learning and knowledge sharing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote control systems engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Control Systems Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, control theory, and system integration, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with PLC programming, SCADA systems, MATLAB/Simulink, and industry certifications such as PE or ISA are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this field. These abilities are crucial for designing reliable remote systems, troubleshooting complex issues, and ensuring seamless operations in automated environments.

What does a remote control systems engineer do?

A Remote Control Systems Engineer designs, develops, and maintains systems that allow for the remote operation of machines, equipment, or processes. This role involves working with hardware and software to ensure reliable communication and control, often using wireless or networked technologies. Engineers in this field may work on projects ranging from industrial automation to unmanned vehicles, ensuring that systems are safe, efficient, and user-friendly. Their work requires strong knowledge of electronics, control theory, and programming. The ultimate goal is to enable operators to control equipment remotely, often from significant distances, with precision and safety.

About the Role
The Information Technology Group (ITG) is a collection of people, processes, and technology investments designed to achieve the business goals of FTI Consulting. The Collaboration Systems Engineer will serve as a technical leader responsible for the architecture, design, implementation, optimization, and lifecycle management of enterprise audio-visual and collaboration environments. This role combines deep expertise in video conferencing, wireless presentation, integrated room technologies, and Crestron/Extron platforms with the ability to establish standards, lead complex room initiatives, and provide final technical guidance for custom solutions mandated by GRE. The successful candidate will partner closely with business stakeholders, project managers, IT teams, systems integrators, and vendors to deliver scalable, high-quality meeting space solutions that support executive, client-facing, and enterprise-wide needs.
What You'll Do
  • Design, configure, implement, maintain, and optimize a wide variety of AV systems and equipment, including cameras, microphones, DSPs, codecs, room control panels, switching, control processors, wireless presentation platforms, and display technologies.
  • Provide engineering oversight for conference rooms and executive spaces, ensuring room readiness, implementation quality, operational resilience, and a high standard of service for executive and client-facing events.
  • Conduct routine operational testing, advanced troubleshooting, fault isolation, and root cause analysis on AV systems and integrated room technologies.
  • Lead or support the design and implementation of custom AV solutions for complex rooms mandated by GRE, ensuring alignment with business requirements, standards, and user experience expectations.
  • Own solution architecture for complex AV environments, including requirements discovery, design development, equipment selection, standards alignment, and final technical design approval for custom room implementations.
  • Act as a technical expert and liaison with office stakeholders, project managers, systems integrators, GRE, and third-party vendors for solution design, deployment, upgrades, and issue resolution.
  • Establish, maintain, and continuously improve enterprise AV standards, documentation, support models, and room design patterns, and contribute to roadmap planning for collaboration and meeting space technologies.
  • Provide technical leadership to systems integrators, third-party vendors, and internal project stakeholders by reviewing designs, validating implementation quality, resolving escalated issues, and ensuring solutions meet enterprise and GRE requirements.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for enterprise collaboration platforms, providing technical guidance, escalation support, and best practices for Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and related room technologies.
  • Partner with IT and business teams to define user requirements and translate them into scalable AV and collaboration solutions the broader ITG organization can support.
  • Lead complex enterprise AV initiatives such as room modernization programs, platform standardization efforts, technology refreshes, and high-visibility meeting space deployments across offices or business groups.
  • Lead configuration standards and provide advanced troubleshooting for AV-related software, control interfaces, wireless presentation systems, and endpoint integrations across room systems and workstations.
  • Oversee the operational health and support strategy for enterprise AV systems, including display technologies, projectors, video conferencing platforms, room control systems, wireless presentation systems and scheduling solutions, using documented standards and service procedures.
  • Provide technical consultation on connectivity, workflows, and best practices across AV conferencing and wireless presentation solutions, particularly for complex, high-visibility, or non-standard room use cases.
  • Develop and deliver user training, technical demonstrations, and adoption guidance to improve effective use of AV and collaboration technologies.
  • Partner with workplace, reception, and event support teams to align room scheduling, service readiness, and AV requirements for internal and external meetings.
  • Oversee complex video and audio conferencing requirements, monitor service utilization and trends, and use operational insights to inform capacity, standards, and service improvements.
  • Evaluate emerging AV and collaboration technologies to support continuous improvement, innovation, and alignment with enterprise best practices.
  • Build trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders by delivering high-quality consultation, proactive communication, and reliable execution for meetings, events, and high-visibility engagements.

How You'll Grow
