What is a remote contract job?

A remote contract job is a position where an individual is hired to perform specific tasks or projects for a company on a contractual basis, but works from a location outside of the company's physical office—often from home or another remote location. These contracts can range from short-term gigs to long-term agreements, and typically outline the scope of work, payment terms, and duration. Remote contract jobs are popular in fields like IT, writing, design, and consulting, offering flexibility for both employers and workers. Contractors are usually responsible for their own taxes and benefits, as they are not considered full-time employees.

What are the qualifications to get a remote contract job?

The primary qualifications for a remote contract job vary by position, though a college degree and several years of experience are helpful for almost all remote jobs. Employers strongly prefer to hire independent contractors who have demonstrated experience and success within the industry, so the more you've worked in your field of expertise, the easier it is to get a remote contract job doing the same type of work. Employers may also ask you to pass a test of some kind. This is especially common in areas like translation and programming. Fulfilling your responsibilities and duties in a remote contract job requires communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage your time. Many contractors partner with agencies to help find work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote contract professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Contract professional, strong self-management, time management, and expertise in your field—often demonstrated through a relevant degree or portfolio—are essential. Familiarity with collaboration tools like Slack, Zoom, project management systems (e.g., Asana, Trello), and electronic contract platforms is typically required. Excellent communication, reliability, and adaptability help you build trust and effectively coordinate with remote teams and clients. These skills ensure productive, high-quality work while maintaining strong client relationships from a distance.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in remote contract roles, and how can they be addressed?

Remote contract professionals often encounter challenges such as maintaining clear communication with clients, managing time zones, and staying motivated without direct supervision. To address these issues, it's helpful to establish regular check-ins, utilize project management tools, and set clear expectations at the start of each contract. Additionally, creating a dedicated workspace and a structured daily routine can improve productivity and work-life balance.

Job description

Senior Infor Syteline CSI Cloud Functional Consultant - Contract
Location: Remote - Portsmouth, New Hampshire
Travel: On-site in Portsmouth, NH approximately once per month
Employment Type: Contract 12 months (potential extensions in 3-month increments)
Direct applicants only - No agencies or third-party submissions
THE COMPANY
Galvion designs, develops, and manufactures advanced ballistic helmets and dynamic power and data management solutions for the modern battlefield. We are a fast-paced, global defense manufacturer focused on enhancing the agility, survivability, and operational effectiveness of the modern warfighter and tactical operator.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Galvion is seeking a highly experienced Senior Infor Syteline CSI Cloud Functional Consultant to provide hands-on functional expertise across our manufacturing and ERP operations.
This is not a general ERP Business Analyst position. We are looking for an experienced Infor Syteline CSI Cloud professional who has worked directly within complex manufacturing environments and understands how manufacturing master data, planning, costing, inventory, shop-floor execution, and ERP configuration work together.
The successful candidate will be expected to independently assess issues, identify root causes, recommend solutions, and work directly with business users, IT, and external partners to improve and stabilize our Infor Syteline CSI Cloud environment.
Candidates should have significant hands-on experience with Infor Syteline CSI Cloud implementations, manufacturing process design, BOM and routing remediation, APS, standard costing, Factory Track, master data, and production support.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
A typical day may include:
  • Serve as a senior functional subject matter expert for Infor Syteline CSI Cloud across manufacturing and business operations
  • Evaluate existing Infor Syteline CSI Cloud configurations, processes, and master data and identify gaps affecting manufacturing execution, planning, costing, inventory, and reporting
  • Lead remediation and improvement of BOMs, routings, work centers, labor and machine standards, item master data, and other manufacturing master data
  • Provide hands-on expertise with Infor Syteline CSI Cloud APS, including planning parameters, infinite and finite planning concepts, capacity, scheduling, and the master-data dependencies required for reliable planning
  • Support and optimize Infor Factory Track functionality and its integration with Infor Syteline CSI Cloud for shop-floor transactions, labor reporting, material movement, production reporting, and manufacturing execution
  • Provide deep functional expertise in standard costing, including material, labor, burden/overhead, routing, work center, and BOM cost components
  • Troubleshoot standard-versus-actual cost discrepancies and identify underlying master-data, transactional, or process issues
  • Support cost rollups, standard cost maintenance, manufacturing variances, and related Finance and Operations processes
  • Analyze manufacturing workflows and identify ERP configuration, master-data, or process issues contributing to operational inefficiencies
  • Support production planning, scheduling, work orders, material requirements, inventory management, purchasing, order management, quality, engineering, and financial processes within Infor Syteline CSI Cloud
  • Work directly with Operations, Supply Chain, Engineering, Finance, Quality, and IT to resolve complex ERP and manufacturing issues
  • Translate manufacturing and business requirements into actionable Infor Syteline CSI Cloud functional requirements and solutions
  • Create and maintain process maps, workflows, work instructions, and functional documentation
  • Support system testing, regression testing, user acceptance testing, deployment, and post-production validation
  • Work with internal technical resources and external Infor Syteline CSI Cloud partners and vendors to drive issues through resolution

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO SUCCEED
Required Experience
  • 7+ years of hands-on Infor Syteline CSI Cloud experience, preferably within discrete manufacturing, defense, aerospace, or another complex manufacturing environment
  • Demonstrated experience participating in or leading Infor Syteline CSI Cloud implementations, migrations, major upgrades, or manufacturing transformation initiatives
  • Deep functional knowledge of Infor Syteline CSI Cloud manufacturing functionality
  • Hands-on experience with Infor Factory Track integrated with Infor Syteline CSI Cloud
  • Strong working knowledge of Infor Syteline CSI Cloud including planning, scheduling, capacity, and the master-data requirements necessary for accurate planning results
  • Demonstrated experience with standard costing and manufacturing cost accounting processes within Infor Syteline CSI Cloud
  • Demonstrated experience identifying and remediating BOM, routing, item master, work center, inventory, and other manufacturing master-data issues
  • Strong understanding of the relationship between BOMs, routings, work centers, labor, materials, overhead, planning, scheduling, inventory, and manufacturing costing
  • Experience troubleshooting ERP issues through root cause rather than simply documenting or escalating them
  • Experience supporting production environments where Infor Syteline CSI Cloud is critical to day-to-day manufacturing operations
  • Ability to work independently with business stakeholders and challenge processes or data when they do not align with manufacturing or ERP best practices

Highly Preferred
  • Defense or aerospace manufacturing experience
  • Experience working within regulated manufacturing environments
  • Experience recovering, stabilizing, or remediating an Infor Syteline CSI Cloud implementation that has significant master-data or process deficiencies
  • Experience with multi-site Infor Syteline CSI Cloud environments
  • Experience with manufacturing quality processes and ERP-integrated quality systems
  • Experience with Power BI and reporting against Infor Syteline CSI Cloud data
  • Experience working with multiple implementation partners, vendors, and internal business teams
  • Experience developing manufacturing process maps and functional documentation using Visio or similar tools
